ISBN 9781491137642. UPC: 680160691098. The Garden of the Finzi-Continis novel by Giorgio Bassani.
Based on Bassani’s 1962 novel, THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS dramatizes the true story of a prosperous Jewish family’s disruptions and consequences from state-mandated antisemitism in Italy during World War II. Gordon describes the opera as “romantic, sun-drenched, and cataclysmic, all at the same time.” This dramatically topical and personal grand opera premiered at New York City Opera and National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene to rave reviews in 2022. Chris Ruel wrote in OperaWire, “I have chosen Ricky Ian Gordon and Michael Korie’s THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS as my favorite opera of 2022.”.At one point, in 2008, I was walking down 72nd Street, and I passed the video store, (this is when there were video stores) and I thought to myself, I wonder if Kevin (my partner) has ever seen The Garden of the Finzi-Continis? which was always one of my favorite movies. My reaction when we watched it that night was unlike any other time I had seen it. I was wrenched, sobbing, inconsolable. My heart felt like the autumn leaves we see blowing through the garden at the end of the movie. It seemed immediately that this had to be my next opera. I called Michael Korie, and we both bought the Bassani novel and read it. We settled on it. It felt clear that we both had a collective story to tell through it.Because this opera is so close to both of our hearts, it is dedicated to our fathers. It is not only that The Garden of the Finzi-Continis is a Holocaust story that makes it so resonant for me, though obviously this is no small matter, but the tragedy of people trying to live their lives, or actually living them, their petty disappointments, their heartbreaks, against the backdrop of total catastrophe… that makes it so moving. They cannot possibly imagine what will befall them, but we know… and this makes their every move fascinating and devastating… like watching moths under a glass. It is romantic, sun-drenched and cataclysmic, all at the same time. This is why I had to write it.

Peace on earth. Has there ever been such a thing - will there ever be? Wars and rumors of wars are the mile markers of history. Wars seem to be the events by which history is recorded. Did you ever hear of World Peace I or World Peace II - or the years of Civil Peace? Did the Holy Scriptures really promise Peace On Earth? Did an angel from heaven really proclaim “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!” ? (Luke 2:14) The answer is...YES!Butwhatabout...? - Butwhatabout...? - Butwhatabout...?We could spend most of our lives filling in these blanks. However - if we take the cognizant, courageous leap of faith - if we choose to believe God's Word is true - then we must refine our understanding of peace. Jesus said - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27Jesus knows about peace - He is indeed the Prince of Peace. How then can we define peace...? Peace is not the absence of conflict - Peace is the presence of God.God made His presence known in a spectacular, miraculous way long ago in the ancient city of Bethlehem. His presence remains just as real - just as powerful - just as loving. Thanks be to God for His tender mercy and all sufficient grace. May we be instruments used of God to live out and reach others with the good news. Glory to God in the highest! There Is Peace in the World Tonight.

When the Texas Choral Consort asked Welcher to write a short prologue to Haydn's The Creation, his first reaction was that Haydn already presents Chaos in his introductory movement. As he thought about it, Welcher began envisioning a truer void to precede Haydn's depiction of Chaos within the scope of 18th-century classical style - quoting some of Haydn's themes and showing human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation melange of color, mood, and atmosphere. Welcher accepted this challenge with the proviso that his prologue would lead directly into Haydn's masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause in between. Scored for mixed chorus and Haydn's instrumentation, Without Form and Void is a dramatically fresh yet pragmatic enhancement to deepen any performance of Haydn's The Creation. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. When Brent Baldwin asked me to consider writing a short prologue to THE CREATION, my first response was “Why?â€Â THE CREATION already contains a prologue; it’s called “Representation of Chaosâ€, and it’s Haydn’s way of showing the formless universe. How could a new piece do anything but get in the way? But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The Age of Enlightenment’s idea of “Chaos†was just extended chromaticism, no more than Bach used (in fact, Bach went further).Perhaps there might be a way to use the full resources of the modern orchestra (or at least, a Haydn-sized orchestra) and the modern chorus to really present a cosmic soup of unborn musical atoms, just waiting for Haydn’s sure touch to animate them. Perhaps it could even quote some of Haydn’s themes before he knew them himself, and also show human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation mélange of color, mood, and atmosphere. So I accepted the challenge, with the proviso that my new piece not be treated as some kind of “overtureâ€, but would instead be allowed to lead directly into Haydn’s masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause. I crafted this five minute piece to begin with a kind of “music of the spheres†universe-hum, created by tuned wine glasses and violin harmonics. The chorus enters very soon after, with the opening words of Genesis whispered simultaneously in as many languages as can be found in a chorus. The first two minutes of my work are all about unborn human voices and unfocused planetary sounds, gradually becoming more and more “coherent†until we finally hear actual pitches, melodies, and words. Three of Haydn’s melodies will be heard, to be specific, but not in the way he will present them an hour from now. It’s almost as if we are listening inside the womb of the universe, looking for a faint heartbeat of worlds, animals, and people to come. At the end of the piece, the chorus finally finds its voice with a single word: “God!â€, and the orchestra finally finds its own pulse as well. The unstoppable desire for birth must now be answered, and it is----by Haydn’s marvelous oratorio. I am not a religious man in any traditional sense. Neither was Haydn, nor Mozart, nor Beethoven. But all of them, as well as I, share in what is now called a humanistic view of how things came to be, how life in its many forms developed on this planet, and how Man became the recorder of history. The gospel according to John begins with a parody of Genesis: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.â€Â  I love that phrase, and it’s in that spirit that I offer my humble “opener†to the finest work of one of the greatest composers Western music has ever known. My piece is not supposed to sound like Haydn. It’s supposed to sound like a giant palette, on which a composer in 1798 might find more outrageous colors than his era would permit…but which, I hope, he would have been delighted to hear.

Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests his mother to sing a lullaby but, alas, knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit of Gabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end of time, there to livein eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words, and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narrator whose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for a work Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75th anniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus, Mary, the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd ’s personal musical aesthetic which she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.

Come close and listen to a story that will change your life. A great conflict is about to be decided. This conflict has been gaining momentum since the foundation of the world and nothing can stop this war. Battle lines are being drawn that will determine the fate of the world. On one side stands the Almighty and all of the hosts of Heaven, on the other the enemy and all of the legions of hell. And in the middle -- in the very epicenter of the vicious battle -- there hangs a lone figure on a wooden structure that is stained with blood. This forsaken and condemned man has the appearance of a beaten and broken beggar. But make no mistake, He is a King. His blood is royal beyond comprehension. He knows what is at stake. He knows what is required, He knows the pain and suffering a full and irrevocable victory will cost. This is the account of events that sound like legend, that stretch the imagination beyond reason. Yet all that you will hear is absolutely and eternally true. Come close and listen to a story that occurred long ago, in a far off land, once upon a cross.

Emily Dickinson's two poems entitled Ending and Dawn provide the ideal backdrop for an experience that begins in darkness and ends in a burst of light and mystery. Meredith Tompkins' interpretation of the two texts centers on the multi-faceted meanings of each poem, exploring themes of lost youth, leaving home, mortality, destiny and hope. Audiences and choirs alike will experience Dickinson's poignant words through haunting melodies, vivid text-painting, dynamic contrast, minimalist soundscapes and melodic layering that gradually builds to intense and thought-provoking conclusions.Ending:That is solemn we have ended, —Be it but a play,Or a glee among the garrets,Or a holiday,Or a leaving home; or later,Parting with a worldWe have understood, for betterStill it be unfurled. Dawn:Not knowing when the dawn will comeI open every door;Or has it feathers like a bird,Or billows like a shore?

This is a chronicle of our redemption - an account of events removed from us by two millennia - and yet a story that reverberates today in the echoes of ancient thunder. The world was changed by what occurred during this week we remember. From the promise first voiced by the prophets - to the angel chorus rejoicing in the evening sky near Bethlehem - to the ministry years and miraculous deeds - Jesus has been a divine enigma. For those who encounter Him and are able to behold His glory, He is all that He claims to be and more. For those who are blinded by sin and pride, He is a threat to be dealt with. He has been misquoted, mistreated, misunderstood, misrepresented and marked as a heretic. But make no mistake - the evil one knows exactly who He is and has but one plan for Him - eternal defeat and death. The Father - the Creator of the world - knows Jesus as only a Father can - and He has but one plan for His Child - eternal victory. His only Son will be Forever Triumphant.

William Wordsworth's reflection of a time gone by acknowledges past heartaches while creating a dream world where beautiful memories reign. As the voices subtly rise and fall to trace a distant rainbow, an ethereal piano accompaniment glistens above. Then together, they soar to new heights to “find strength in what remains behind.† .

The poetry on which this composition is based is the Ballad of External Life (the Ballade des äußeren Lebens) from the pen of Viennese author Hugo von Hofmansthal (1874-1929). He is known for, amongst other things, his libretti for the works of Richard Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra) and as founder of the Salzburg Festival. Von Hofmansthal was one of the last of the German Symbolists. Central to this literary movement was the unification of the internal and external worlds. The search for meaning was a cornerstone of this fin-de-siècle movement. In the Ballade des äußeren Lebens (Ballad of External Life), the meaninglessness ofexistence is expressed in restricting, oppressive metaphors—an ambience that is reflected in the music. Ultimately, man is capable of establishing order from seeming chaos. The poet expresses this powerfully in a non-rhyming line of poetry: ‘And yet, he who says “evening” says much, A word, from which profundity and sorrow flow’.This composition follows the overall structure of the ballad, which is written in terza rima—interlocking three-line rhymes. The choral work can be performed by a chamber choir, but also by a much larger ensemble. The parts are mainly in four voices (SATB), although there are also six parts (SAATBB). One chord is arranged for eight voices. The composer conducted this work at its première, to open the 2013 International Choir Biennial in Aachen. The choir was comprised of four chamber choirs: Aachen Youth Choir, Carmina Mundi, Aachen Chamber Choir and Aachen Madrigal Choir.

Looking for a fantastic setting of Langston Hughes' poem “In Time of Silver Rain”? Look no further. This poem was featured in Hughes' 1947 poetry collection Fields of Wonder. With everything happening in our world today, this poem portrays an optimistic outlook on life. Although there is no consensus on the meaning of “silver rain,” here it represents the idea that, as in life, something good can come from both gentle and heavy rain. It also symbolizes winter's end and the spring rain's arrival. For all who are navigating the ups and downs of life in every season, take comfort in knowing that spring will come, bringing new beginnings. Like no one else can do, André Thomas has written a fantastic setting honoring the words of Hughes. This piece come highly recommended for your mixed choral ensembles of various levels.
