This work grew out of the co-creator's love for the tunes and texts coming out of the Appalachian Mountains and the shape-note and early Moravian singing tradition. In the words of Tim Sharp, ââ¬ÅWe took the image of bands of angels singing and playing at the Nativity as reported in the second chapter of Luke's gospel, transported that image to Appalachia, and Angel Band is the result.ââ¬Â Containing 8 carols (mostly familiar), a processional and recessional, Angel Band is a fusion of ideas ranging from medieval tunes to contemporary bluegrass.

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy. As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing†— lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls†from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars†from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

Timothy Sharp's arrangement of the folk tune “I Don't Need No Man” ingeniously employs vocal percussion to emulate the sensation of a speeding train on its tracks. Using dynamic sounds like “chika-chika,” “mama-mama,” “papa-papa,” and “sita-sita,” it cleverly replicates the rhythmic intensity of a fast-moving locomotive. This piece offers an exhilarating concert experience, perfect for school and collegiate choirs seeking an engaging and vibrant performance.

2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the writing of Francis Scott Key's piece that became our National Anthem. Tim Sharp, Executive Director of ACDA saw an opportunity for choirs all across America to stand together in harmony and celebration. His arrangement is based on the improvisation performed by Rachmaninoff, an American citizen, and can be sung a cappella or accompanied (see NMK1001/HL00125145) from National Music Publishers.

Leonardo da Vinci was not only a fine musician but he created musical riddles. ACDA Executive Director Dr. Tim Sharp has realized one of these riddles and sent it to composer Wes Ramsay who has placed it in a new song with contemporary flavors. The result is a delightful new piece of choral art. Great for high school festivals and concerts.

As Tim Sharp travels the world as an ambassador for choral music he sometimes hears composers in foreign lands that deserve our attention. So is the case with this selection based on the Sara Teasdale poem about clouds. The young composer is committed to melody in a way that is a refreshing return to what seems right. The harmonic treatment is sensitive and sensible, and most satisfying. An excellent concert piece for high school, college and community choirs. Medium in difficulty.

This contemporary winter choral brings a fresh approach to the genre. A lyrical minor-key verse, which becomes a canon the second time, sharply contrasts with the bright, uplifting chorus. Refreshing. Accompaniment included on PianoTrax 1 CD (00-31028).

In Au bord de l'eau (By the water) two lovers sit as in a dream, removed from the real world with all its conflicts. They only take themselves seriously, the surrounding nature lies as beneath a dream-like veil: steadily like the river flowing by, the passing clouds, the babbling brook, time also passes. The poet Sully Prudhomme, the first Nobel prizewinner for literature (1901), ends the poem with the assertion that only love is immortal. With this knowledge, Gabriel Faure's setting turns from a dreamy, deceptive C sharp minor to a more promising C sharp major. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

For SSATB unaccompanied This piece was cited as an example of good church music in S.S.Wesley's pamphlet about the state of church music in 1849. The text had significance for Samuel Wesley as these were the last words said to him by his father. He uses the unusual key (for the time) of C sharp minor, giving the work a special intensity.

Shiki began as a request for a short winter-themed piece for the Hamalais-Osakunnan Laulajat choir in Helsinki. It eventually grew into a four seasons-type cycle on haiku by a 20th century Japanese monk Santoka Taneda. The music of Shiki is a progression through various states of near-stasis. The main impression the composer wished to convey was the one of absolute stillness at the heart of each scene, of communion with the outer world, as if the viewer were drawing the landscape into him, and at the same time dissolving himself into it. The voices are treated texturally, as well as textually, moving on slow masses, with the soft but precisecely colored vowels of Japanese creating the basic sounds, and the sharper consonants giving them shape and definition.
