When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returned to Salzburg in January 1779 from his journey to Paris, his luggage contained a single church music work - an unfinished Kyrie in E flat major (KV 296a) together with sketches for the Sanctus and Benedictus (KV 296c). In 2015, at the suggestion of the late Armin Kircher, Johann Simon Kreuzpointner set about compiling a five-movement setting of the mass from this material, also drawing on an unfinished cantata in E flat major (KV 429). For the orchestration and text underlay, Kreuzpointner took his cue from Mozart's church music works. With this edition Kreuzpointner, an experienced church musician and composer, created a convincing and stylistically assured work, which he tried out in several performances. The result is a concise setting of the mass, good to sing, which does not present any great difficulties for soloists, chorus, or orchestra. The title Missa brevissima does not come from Mozart, but was chosen because of the brevity of the mass setting with its missing Credo. The motet Quis te comprehendat, K-Anhang 110, is based on the Adagio in Mozart's Wind Serenade K. 361, the Gran Partita. The arrangement of this instrumental movement with the addition of a four-part choir deserves to be regarded as a successful example of the practice of parody, on a higher level than many less accomplished arrangements of the period. As in most of those cases the identity of the arranger is unknown, but his sensitive treatment of the original points to a gifted musician. Characteristic accompanying figures are given to the strings, while the solo violin and the organ appear melodically. The homophonic choral setting, whose Latin words are a religious song of praise with no specific liturgical connection, is based on the works harmonic substance. The Carus critical new edition is the very first edition of the Grabmusik which is based on Mozart's separate autographs for movements 1-6, and 7-8, respectively. The fact that the final movement also contains two horn parts which have never appeared in print is an absolutely sensational discovery. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. Dixit et Magnificat comprises the earliest vesper sections of all the vesper services and vesper psalm settings that Mozart wrote. In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. Score available separately - see item CA.4003800.

The Mass in C minor, K. 427, Mozart's Great Mass remaines a torso - a circumstance which is extremely regrettable, especially given the monumentality of this work. Mozart finished only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Osanna, and Benedictus of the Mass. For two movements from the Credo he only completed sketches without instrumentation. In March 1785 Mozart arranged Kyrie and Gloria, supplemented by a tenor and a soprano aria, for the Italian oratorio Davide penitente.
