There is much flexibility with this piece-it may be sung by cantor and assembly with the organ, or it may be expanded with optional SATB parts that sing the refrain and support the soloist on the verses. There are some meter changes, but neither these, nor the choral writing, will prove to be too much of a challenge for the average choir. Cantor, optional SATB.

Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4000700.

As with scarcely any other work of the 17th century, Monteverdi's Vespers has found its way into today's repertoire. Nevertheless, the Vespers still leaves open many questions. The new edition, with its critical examination of the sources, takes up these oft-discussed issues concerning scoring possibilities, performance practice, transpositions and liturgical unity. It is based on all of the surviving copies of the print of 1610 and the earliest handwritten entries have also been critically examined and evaluated. Performance material is organized in a flexible manner to allow for the use of different instruments in those movements without obbligato instruments in order to reinforce the vocal parts and thus invites an individual musical approach to the challenge presented by Monteverdi's Vespers. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2780100.

Written in memory of Erich Fried (1921-1988), a writer who wrote the libretto for Goehr's opera Arden Must Die and whose poems were set in Warngedichte (op. 22), Carol for St Steven is a short and playful carol about St Steven as a servant boy in King Herod's Hall. Seeing the Star and realising that Jesus has been born, the boy tells King Herod whose overreaction results in Steven being stoned to death (explaining why the Vigil of St Stephen takes place on Christmas Night). With a treble soloist singing the lines of Steven and a bass singing the parts of Herod, Goehr's carol for St Steven is an alternative carol in many senses, but one that would be ideal for both amateur and professional choirs looking for new repertoire.

In 1988, GIA released Michael Joncas’s No Greater Love, a flexible mass setting offering cathedral-style music that was accessible to the singing assembly. Beautiful melodies enhanced by SATB choir and extensive orchestrations were the hallmark of this best-selling work. Now, Michael Joncas has revised this treasured setting using the 2010 Revised Order of Mass. The revision has a new through-composed Gloria that can be sung in unison during the Sundays of Ordinary Time, and for more festive occasions, one can add the optional instrumental and SATB choral parts. Also new to this setting are the gospel acclamation and a sung setting of the prayer of the faithful. The memorable congregational parts for the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei haven’t changed and the much-loved Holy, Holy has been adapted to accommodate the 2010 Revised Order of Mass text. The optional orchestration is now reduced and includes string quartet, flute, and oboe parts.

The composer set the pensive, lamenting poem by Andreas Gryphius to music as a demanding choral work. The text is musically reinterpreted by means of varied tone colours and through an emphatic interpretation of the words. Initially homophonic, the texture of the setting becomes polyphonic over the course of the piece; the number of parts varies between four and nineteen canonically treated parts. Solo passages round off the 'Karfreitags-Sonett' [Good Friday Sonnet] which was commissioned by the Bavarian Radio and premiered in Nuremberg in 1986.

This work for soprano, tenor and baritone soloists, chorus and orchestra was commissioned by the National Confederation of Music Societies to celebrate its Jubilee in 1985, with funds made available by the Arts Council of Great Britain. The first performance was given in London on 13th April 1985 by the London Symphony Chorus (chorus master Simon Joly) and the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hilcox. The title of this work refers not only to the use of the words of St John the Divine, but also to the four poems that are set alongside them. These poems are all visionary and revelatory and deal either directly or by suggestion with ideas of St John. Vocal score with piano reduction of the orchestral parts.

The hymn tune SHADES MOUNTAIN (K. Lee Scott, 1987) is paired with a 1976 Erik Routley text in this concertato for choir, congregation, brass quintet, organ, and optional timpani and percussion. Six stanzas of the fifteen-measure melody are provided here. Two stanzas are notated in SATB layout. Stanza 2 encourages the congregation to sing in four parts as in a hymnal layout (reproducible congregational pages are provided). Stanza 4 is for the choir alone, a cappella, in four parts. One stanza (1) asks the women of the congregation to sing with the women of the choir, and this concept is repeated with the men (stanza 3). Stanza 5 is unison, stanza 6 is unison with descant. An introduction and interlude before the final stanza round out the piece. A majestic piece, full of wonderful variety and color.
