An a cappella treatment of this wonderful French carol. The piece begins with a four-part strophic setting; then as the piece develops, the parts begin to divide and play off each other, some serving as accompaniment to the melody. A delightful, bright and energetic treatment.

Evening Comes is the first piece in a series of commissions for the Saint Cyril's Music Series and is composed specifically for an evening service. Cardinal Newman's prayer, suggests a quiet, hushed, prayerful attitude which is evoked by an abundance of suspensions and resolutions within a relatively conservative harmonic context. The beginning tempo marking of Espressivo is intended to convey a feeling of rubato throughout, but not overly so. The fortes should never be thunderous, but the pianos should be exquisite, with the final amen eliciting a sense of renewed beginning rather than a final ending.lDuration 2:45.

Reger composed Palmsonntagmorgen (WoO VI/18) at the beginning of 1902 at the request of the Chemnitz organist and choral director Georg Stolz. Stolz may also have suggested the text by Emanuel Geibel. The division of the text into sections, and the imitative and chordal passages in the five-part unaccompanied setting already point towards Reger's later motets.

As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning - over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain - on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear, and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.

A Good Understanding (2005) was written for Tim Brown and the choir of Clare College, Cambridge with the generous cooperation of John Scott and the Boys of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. A Good Understanding, with texts culled from two psalms, is designed to share a program with Rutter's expansive and expressive Mass of the Children. The piece unfolds episodically short choral phrases alternating with longer instrumental interludes. The first half of the text is typical psaltry praise-making: outlining agreements, explaining the rules; the music is, accordingly, severe but practical. The second half of the text begins, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom/a good understanding have all they that do his commandments.?I find the idea of a good understanding?to be an especially exciting reward for following the rules; the boys sing pulsed syllables and long descants to celebrate the covenant while the choir sings a lilting, repetitive refrain. (Psalm 111, 10). - Nico Muhly.

The title's Third Word of Creation refers to verses from Rilke's Book of Hours which indicate the fear of what other delicate experiments God might come up with after 'light' and 'man'. Schultz contradicts the text by combining it with the monolithic beginning of the First Book of Moses in the Old Testament, which is imbued with the rightness of God's actions, as well as with lines by the Persian poet Rumi in the translation by Friedrich Ruckert. The latter indicate the comforting certainty of rebirth as ahigher being up to the unfathomable spirit of God. The composer accomplishes the feat of weaving all three levels into a complex, ethereal structure in which the words nevertheless always remain clearly understandable.

“If Ye Love Me” is a compelling exploration of mystical harmonies and intricate counterpoint. Beginning with a captivating set of harmonies, the piece transitions through flowing, meditative textures into a kaleidoscopic canon across all voices. The composition peaks in a moment of dissonance, which resolves into joyfully climactic chords that echo its opening harmonies. Ideal for choirs looking for a rich tapestry of harmonies and textures, the piece offers a final transformative moment that leaves the listener with a sense of spiritual elevation.
