Although a part for flute (or violin) is provided to emphasize the hymn tune, there are other creative instrumental opportunities to explore. Use a cello or bassoon for the bass accompaniment line. The organist is encouraged to experiment with different registrations and colors. The tenors will want to be well warmed-up, and the occasional tenuous bass section will appreciate the support from the keyboard. The Flute and Violin parts are optional. .

This Welsh pre-reformation tune has been taken from The Song Book of Myra Evans. This gently rocking melody is most sensitively arranged by George Guest, in a quasi-polyphonic style. Each voice has the melody as the piece progresses and ends in a great peace. This work was originally meant to be sung at a wake or funeral, as a prayer for a friend's soul.

ENGELBERG is one of those tunes that musicians love to program whenever possible. While there seems to be no shortage of texts to yoke with it, Delores Dufner’s well crafted hymn, which sings of Christ our Light, was written specifically for the tune, creating a natural pairing that we think Stanford would have appreciated! Powell’s setting with brass quartet captures the grandeur of the tune.

Kingwood, preserved in several nineteenth-century shape-note tunebooks, has been traced to Asabel's Nettleton's Village Hymns of 1824. It is a swinging tune in 6/8 meter with a cautionary text of considerable quality. Although the air is in the tenor, there are interesting parts for all in keeping with Kingwood's singing-school origins. This is music of, for and by the people and may be sung heartily in the vernacular tradition.

The arrangement of this American folk tune—which has had such disparate pairings as “What Wondrous Love Is This†and texts dealing with politics—is beautifully handled here by van den Honert. Starting with sopranos only, the other voices are gradually mixed in as the piece progresses. Once everyone is in, a mostly canonic verse is followed by a full-bodied section that ebbs away until the piece ends almost as it began, with sopranos on the melody above a simple hum in the other voices.

A reflective composition that is not challenging and features an attractive part for a soloist at the beginning and end. The men’s parts provide a supportive, gently rocking accompaniment throughout, except for a unison verse and a lovely 4-part a cappella verse. This is a wonderful new tune to pair with Wesley’s timeless text when you want to venture beyond the traditional pairings (e.g., HYFRYDOL, STUTTGART).

Hopson pairs a wonderful poem by Robert Southwell with a scottish folk tune in this anthem, perfect for the Sundays after Christmas. The text explores the implications of Christ's birth, and the addition of flute adds to the gentle lilt of the tune. Tune: Scottish Folk Tune.
