Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Advent. Choral Score. Composed 1723. BWV 186. 8 pages. Duration 40 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.186/55. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3118655). ISBN 9790007186562. Key: G minor / c dorian. Language: German/English. The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Full score. 40 pages. Carus Verlag #CV 31.351/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3135100). ISBN 9790007181598. In good time for the Reformation anniversary year 2017, this edition offers four distinctive movements from Johann Sebastian Bach's Reformation cantatas in arrangements for choir and organ. From the cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80 the ornate opening chorus, the fifth movement Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel war, with its impressive musical depiction of the battle between heavenly and evil powers, and the final chorale Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn are included. These are joined by the festive chorale Nun danket alle Gott from the Reformation cantata Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild BWV 79. The transcription of Bach's orchestral writing for organ offers performers plenty of opportunity for artistic interpretation, and enables the movements to be performed in an attractive way even with limited resources. $35.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

Text: Franck, Salomo. Text: Salomo Franck. On the 2nd March 1714 Bach, who until then had been employed as a chamber musician and organist at he Court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, was promoted to the position of concert master, and was instructed to relieve the ailing Kapellmeister Johann Samuel Drese by composing and performing new pieces monthly for the church. Following the cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. The extraordinary musical ambition evident in the first Weimar cantatas may have had its roots in the fact htat Bach aspired to become Drese's successor as Court Kapellmeister. Language: German/English. Text: Luther, Martin. Text: Martin Luther. Bach composed the cantata O God, from heaven look on us BWV 2 for the 2nd Trinity Sunday 1724 as the second cantata of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. It is based on Martin Luther's rewriting of Psalm 112. The opening movement is one of a group of cantata opening movements which are not concertante but kept entirely in the motet style, with the instruments serving only to reinforce the singers. The archaic character of this movement is heightened by the addition of a trombone quartet. The concertante style is all the more significant in the first aria for contralto, solo violin and continuo. The first secco recitative represents a special feature: two fragments of the chorale are woven as arioso into the recitative, both in text and melody; futhermore, they are also taken up canonically by the continuo.
