In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards. In 1830 it was one of the very first cantatas by Bach to appear in print. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110200.

In the south German-Austrian region the Pastoral Mass of Johann Baptist Schiedermayr was regarded as one of the most well-known and beloved works in this genre. Engaging melodies, passages in thirds and sixths, and typical pastoral motives, such as horn calls and open fifths, the latter a reminder of the bourdon of bagpipes or a hurdy-gurdy, characterize the movements of the Mass. Lyrical sections, such as the Et incarnatus est, which is the center of Shiedermayr's setting of the Ordinary, alternate with festive passages in which trumpets and timpani brilliantly express the festive joy of Christmas. Contemporary criticism saw in Rheinberger's Stabat Mater op. 16 from 1864 one of the most beautiful works of this type which the present time has to offer. Distinguished through its breadth of conception and its noble tonal effect, with its rich polyphony it reaches the masterpieces of the old Italian school. In the expressive choral movements rich-sounding homophonic passages are combined with sections worked out in strict polyphony. The sustained songlike solo pieces are of a profound expression. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5001600.

The Mass in C minor, K. 427, Mozart's Great Mass remaines a torso - a circumstance which is extremely regrettable, especially given the monumentality of this work. Mozart finished only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Osanna, and Benedictus of the Mass. For two movements from the Credo he only completed sketches without instrumentation. In March 1785 Mozart arranged Kyrie and Gloria, supplemented by a tenor and a soprano aria, for the Italian oratorio Davide penitente. In his arrangement of the Mass in c minor, Richard Maunder added Creed wind and brass instruments to the Credo sketches. Score available separately - see item CA.4062000.

Both of the Kyrie settings in E flat major K. 322 (1778/79) and C major K. 323 (probably not prior to 1790) belong to those works by Mozart which were only handed down as incomplete draft scores. However, in both cases Mozart's original drafts were so extensive and well advanced that Abbe Maximilian Stadler, Mozart's friend and known from the history associated with the Requiem, could complete both settings. In 1830, for the first edition of the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler employed the text of the Marian Antiphon for Easter Regina coeli laetare for the vocal parts. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. Johann Sebastian Bach was able to appreciate good works by other composers, as is shown by contemporary accounts, and by a glimpse into what remains of his music library. Francesco Durante, maestro di cappella in Naples, was known in his time as an accomplished composer, who in his sacred works sought to achieve accommodation between the strict stile antico and the stile moderno of concert music at that time. This combination distinguishes his Mass in C minor, and it may have been what awakened Johann Sebastian Bach's interest in this work. He copied it about 1730, not merely for study purposes but in order to perform it, as is indicated by various alterations which he made to the composition. Bach replaced the Christe by a composition of his own, and for the Kyrie II he used Durante's music for the Gloria, making the alterations required by the different words. A worthwhile discovery! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3500800.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3501200.
