Text: Angier Brock.
SATB Chorus, Organ Duration: 7' Text: Angier Brock Composed: 2010 Published by: Subito Music Publishing YouTube: Ms. Brock’s moving poem is lyrical throughout. Even in its beautiful originality, the poem invokes The Book of Common Prayer and biblical scripture (the latter through references to dust and breath from Genesis 2 to the final line of the poem invoking the opening of Psalm 62). Ms. Brock’s poetry is also filled with wonderful twists on traditional texts (such as in the creative and reverse naming of the Trinity in speaking of Inventing Wind, Generous Christ, and Luminous God). Musically, the main melodic material of the piece is immediately heard on a solo organ color accompanied by organ strings over a recurring pedal pulse on the pitch C. The chorus soon enters with the first stanza of the text. As this stanza unfolds, the harmony starts to gradually change as the pulsing pedal rhythm begins to move upward by step. An organ interlude, reflective of the opening introduction, soon emerges (though now over a C-sharp recurring pedal pulse), and leads to a similar choral setting as found in stanza one. As the poem’s second stanza moves forward, it eventually folds into the more harmonically rich stanza three. A fast, dance-like section evolves at Inventing Wind, what a lively dance your energy creates! eventually bringing the work to its climax point. The spirit of dance soon subsides and leads to a quiet and gentle close on the words …for you alone my soul in silence waits. Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. When considering various winter holidays, what is the common thread? A candle and a song. Beautiful in its simplicity, here's a quiet celebration crafted to resonate universally. Mark's delicate melody and sweet sonorities float effortlessly over a flowing piano accompaniment. With readable rhythms, easy to learn notes, and sensible vocal ranges, it's intentionally uncomplicated so that the message of the text will clearly speak. Hushed and heartfelt, a memorable moment. This book of versatile, pedagogically based choral warm-ups helps conductors take full advantage of this important time in every rehearsal, providing tools for assessment, musicianship, and ensemble unity at the same time singers are warming up their voices. The exercises in Aligning Voices are organized into nine chapters, each focusing on a different area of choral technique: Rhythm Brilliance Intonation Balance Dynamics Consonants Beginning Consonants Diphthongs and Ending Consonants Vowels Each warm-up contains two or more parts, allowing the director to work toward improving choral sound in a texture similar to that of the repertoire. Moreover, author Dean Luethi provides every warm-up in three voicings—SATB, SSAA, and TTBB—and sequentially organizes them by difficulty level. In addition, each section begins by defining the objective for each exercise and offering practical solutions for many of the common challenges choirs face in each area. A companion student edition that contains only the music notation for each warm-up exercise is also available (G-9692S). These exercises go well beyond simply warming up the voice. This resource is a must-have for all choral directors looking to make the most of their warm-up time. Dean Luethi is Associate Professor and Director of the School of Music at Washington State University. In addition to his work at the university, he is a frequently sought after conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, and he has been published in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal. Watch this introductory video on Dean Luethi's (Lee-thee) book Aligning Voices: Exercises to Build Choral Musicianship.

Four poems sharing a common motif of 'Night' provide the texts for my choral cycle Nocturnes, the American Choral Directors Association's commissioned work for its 2005 national convention. For Rilke's atmospheric Sa nuit d'ete, several melodic themes are supported by dense, colorful harmonies in both the choral and piano parts, leading to a climactic section where all are combined and stated simultaneously. Neruda's Soneto de la Noche, from his CienSonetos de Amor, speaks of an eternal love that transcends death while reaffirming life. My a cappella setting of this gorgeous poem is predominantly quiet, serene and folk-like, utilizing direct harmonies accompanying long, lyrical vocal lines. Agee's wondrous Sure on this Shining Night is set much like a song from the American musical theater, a genre for which I have held a life-long esteem. Rilke's poignant Voici le soir recalls the opening bellsounds and jazz-tinged chords of the first movement and serves as an epilogue, quietly concluding this cycle of night songs as darkness descends. --Morten Lauridsen.

There are very few composers who have left such a comprehensive oeuvre covering all genres as Camille Saint-Saens. His vocal music, however, has rather fallen into oblivion - if one leaves aside his 'indestructible' Christmas oratorio (Oratorio de Noel, Opus 12). But apart from that, Saint-Saens, who worked as an organist at various churches from 1852, composed a number of little church music works: settings for different instrumentations, certainly destined to be used in services, including his Ave verum for four-part choir (including organ without pedal ad lib.). It is a simple, yet harmonically rich setting which constitutes a valuable addition to the choral repertoire and an evocative alternative to the common Ave settings.
