The piece is fairly conservative in nature, utilizing many conventional steel drum rhythms and sounds. It is a new approach to composing for the Church and was created to provide a sense of something new, yet having a bit of the familiar as well. Includes the Kyrie, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, and the final Agnus Dei. The keyboard reduction in the octavo score includes the conga parts so it can be performed with piano (percussive) and conga drums, if that is all that is available. Dr. Robinson's arrangement has just the right amount of repetition versus development, and will come together quickly with intuitive voice leading and some stylistic syncopation. The Aloha Mass brings the grace and style of Hawaiian music to the mainland with a blend of melodic styles and native instruments indigenious to the Hawaiian Islands. The percussion is written for Bongo and Conga Drums to simulate the myriad kinds of actual native percussion instrumentsfound in Hawaii and the neighboring Samoan Islands. The Ukuleles required are of only two types, the Tenor and Baritone; however, parts have been provided witen for the full range of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Ukes (Soprano, Alto and Tenor Ukes use the same transposition).
