De Profundis, composed by Nico Muhly with poetry by Charles Anthony Silvestri, was commissioned by The Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, directed by David Skinner, during the first Covid lockdown in the spring of 2020. It was a year and a half in the making, and was conceived during the dark months of Covid lockdown in the spring of 2020 when, for the first time in long history of the English Choral Tradition, choirs fell silent.

The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.

Since an invitation to the Emerald Isle, Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) has been fascinated with the local tradition and culture. Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Monch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Madchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive. Of intermediate difficulty, these choral miniatures are suitable not only for professional ensembles but also for ambitious amateur choirs.

The “De Profundis†text includes excerpts from the Psalms that amount to a call to God to hear our prayers and be merciful. This setting is captivating and distinctively original. The rhythmic playfulness includes mixed meters and ostinato patterns that hint at the composer's Latin roots. Hand claps from the choir accentuate the presentation. The tenor solo is reminiscent of a cantor's cry and pushes the harmonies into phrases of subtle bitonality. When the percussion enters the piece is on a nonstop track to a climactic finish. All in all the work is stunning! An excellent concert choice for college and professional choirs.

Psalm 130 is one of the most dramatic and certainly one of the Old Testament texts has most often been set to music by composers. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord ... who shall stand? Matsushita set this lament pianissimo, chordally and in a low-register, using chromatically altered chords with sparse, detached sounds. In contrast, as the aim and climax of the work he sets, most effectively the hopeful second part half of the text, with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. With the (optional) use of two hand bells he introduces the convincing, optimistic section in F major, which, however, through a reminiscence of the opening de profundis leads into a short coda: but actually Redemption is only optimism, something for the future and not reality. The level of difficulty should pose no problems for a sufficiently-sized choir with sure intonation. It is most impressive when sung either for worship services or in concert. World premiere: March 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany.
