Telemann's Missa brevis on the Christmas hymn Ein Kindelein so lobelich is one of eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motetlike composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. Gottlob Harrer, the successor to Johann Sebastian Bach as Thomaskantor, performed the mass in Leipzig at Christmas in 1750 and 1751 with an instrumental accompaniment and for this purpose he added two horns. They are included in the present edition as ad libitum parts. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3909700.

Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7030300.

The Hochzeitskantate (Wedding Cantata) BWV 195 was performed by Bach from around 1730 at various wedding celebrations in different forms, and was evidently also lent out for performances further afield. The only surviving version of the work dates from the last years of Bach's life. The opulently-scored first part begins and ends with grand choral movements, and Bach scored both parts for soloists and for chorus. At the centre of the cantata is an exceptionally sensitive bass aria, probably one of Bach's most modern vocal compositions of all. A chorale movement (Nun danket all and bringet Ehr/ Now thank we all and offer praise) with obbligato horns concludes the cantata as the second part after the consummation. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3119500.

The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score available separately - see item CA.4060800.

Motet of an unknown arranger (ca. 1820), based on th Adagio of the Serenade KV 361 (Gran Partita). The motet Quis te comprehendat, K-Anhang 110, is based on the Adagio in Mozart's Wind Serenade K. 361, the Gran Partita. The arrangement of this instrumental movement with the addition of a four-part choir deserves to be regarded as a successful example of the practice of parody, on a higher level than many less accomplished arrangements of the period. As in most of those cases the identity of the arranger is unknown, but his sensitive treatment of the original points to a gifted musician. Characteristic accompanying figures are given to the strings, while the solo violin and the organ appear melodically. The homophonic choral setting, whose Latin words are a religious song of praise with no specific liturgical connection, is based on the works harmonic substance. The vocal parts follow the framework and compactly fill out the accompanying instrumental writing. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5136100.

The Requiem of Gabriel Faure is now available in two versions: in the symphonic version which was completed in 1900 and in a version with small orchestra of 1889. The symphonic version of Gabriel Faure's Requiem, published in 1901, was the product of a 13-year compositional process. Starting from the original five-movement form for strings, harp and organ, the composer wrote two additional movements, one after the other, and expanded the instrumentation in various stages for later performances. The present reconstruction of a version with small orchestra differs from other such attempts in that for the first time it presents the work not in a mixed version, but rather in the unified form from 1889. This is distinguished from the final version both in musical terms, as well as through the fact that it forgoes the use of flutes, clarinets and bassoons, while employing only two horns instead of four. With a critical Report with information about the source situation and the edition, and containing the individual readings (alternative readings, etc.). Since in 1889 the Offertoire was still without the choral section the present edition contains the Offertoire of the final version as appendix. Now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2731100.
