The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. Haydn's Missa in Angustiis, also known as theNelson Mass, was composed in 1798. It is one of the six great Mass settings that forms the crowning glory of his vocal music along with The Creation and The Seasons. Continuing the collaboration between Barenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.

Despite all of its folk-line simplicity of melody, Haydn's first mass contains a pious note that, just like its youthful verve, still was to hold fascination for him in his late years when, in 1805, he re-orchestrated his first work. The first version of the mass is considered to have been composed in 1749 or 1750. It was around the same time that Pope Benedict XIV treated questions concerning church music in his encyclical Annus qui in which he condemned the frequently operatic style of church music and demanded liturgical music that revealed an awareness of its religious purpose and that sought to fulfill it with simple means of musical expression. In its liturgical attitude Haydn's first mass is anchorded in this point of view (that to a great extent corresponded to the general standpoint of the churches of the eighteenth century).
