Johann Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor heavily influenced W. A. Mozart's Requiem. In just two weeks Michael Haydn composed his work in December 1771, on the occasion of the death of his employer, Prince Bishop Sigismund Count Schrattenbach, who was beloved among the people and was a great patron of the arts. The work was written under the impression of personal tragedy: Haydn's only child, Aloisia Josepha, died in January 1771, before completing her first year of life. Parts of the Schrattenbach-Requiem were played together with the completed movements from his second, unfinished Requiem during his own furneral service. During the funeral service in Vienna for Joseph Haydn, parts of his younger brother's C-minor Requiem were also performed. Score available separately - see item CA.5032100.

The Mass in C minor, K. 427, Mozart's Great Mass remaines a torso - a circumstance which is extremely regrettable, especially given the monumentality of this work. Mozart finished only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Osanna, and Benedictus of the Mass. For two movements from the Credo he only completed sketches without instrumentation. In March 1785 Mozart arranged Kyrie and Gloria, supplemented by a tenor and a soprano aria, for the Italian oratorio Davide penitente. In his arrangement of the Mass in c minor, Richard Maunder added Creed wind and brass instruments to the Credo sketches. Score available separately - see item CA.4062000.

Mozart's magnificent unfinishedGreat Mass in C minor K. 427is impressive not only for its monumentality and musical beauty but for its fragmentary state which has fascinated scholars and performers for decades.Working together with the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Barenreiter now presents a new edition of this work, reflecting the cutting edge of scholarship while doing justice to the needs of performers.High scholarly standards, the completion and reconstruction of movements: this pioneering publication incorporates all this in order to come as close as possible to the work itself:- TheKyrieandGloria, both of which survive complete in Mozart's hand, are edited in accordance with scholarly standards.- The first two sections of theCredohave been meticulously completed by the editor Ulrich Leisinger, drawing on original Mozart compositions e.g. the ariaDeh vieni non tardarfromThe Marriage of Figaroand paying attention to a stylistically appropriate and transparent sound.- TheSanctusandBenedictus(with theHosanna), which are either incomplete or survive only in secondary sources, have been reconstructed by the editor.Sections without any known sources are left out in this edition. Rounding off the publication is an extensive Foreword (Ger/Eng).The first performance of Ulrich Leisinger's new edition was given in April 2019 in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg by the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra and the ChorWerk Ruhr under the baton of Kent Nagano. The first Austrian premiere took place in Salzburg on August 2019 in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum, with Andrew Manze conducting the Salzburg Camerata to rousing applause from audience and critics alike. The C-minor Mass reconstruction by Helmut Eder on the basis of the New Mozart Edition (BA 4846) is still available: the score and performance material are on hire, the vocal score is on sale.

A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice†is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O†antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. As such, the music is “Advent-like†in nature—joyful and filled with hope. ~~~~~ Preview select songs from this mass setting in the video below:.

Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. Mass No.6 in Eb Major D950 - SATTB Soli, SATB Chorus, Orchestra (full score) - This mass was written in 1828 in the final months of Schubert's life. Like many of his late works, such as the C Major Symphony or Die Winterreise, Schubert never heard the Mass himself. The premiere, given by his brother Ferdinand in October 1829, met with great acclaim from the audience, and further performances soon followed. One contemporary reviewer called Schubert's final Mass surely one of his most profound and perfect creations. Our new urtext edition is based on the autograph score.on the autograph score.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3501200.

Louis Spohr's only Mass is among the most important works of post-classical church music. In this a cappella Mass Spohr brought together harmoniously and with great skill the then current interest in baroque constructional techniques and the quest for an individual, contemporary style of composition. The result is a work which sometimes suggests Mendelssohn, and which offers an accomplished choir impressive music both for church services and for concerts. The first version of “Dardanusâ€, which was performed at the end of 1739, was composed apparently in only six months and marks a particularly productive phase in Rameau’s career. In a period of only six years five of his major works were performed at the Acadmie Royale de Musique in Paris. The theme is taken from Greek mythology: The opera describes the war between Teucer (the future founder of Troy), his Phrygian people and the army of Dardanus.

Georg Philipp Telemann has long been perceived as a composer of sacred music, and particularly of the German-language church cantata. However, in the course of his long life he also composed church works setting Latin texts. In addition to works for smaller ensembles there is presently only one larger psalm setting, Deus judicium tuum, that is available in a new edition. This is now joined by the first ever scholarly, critical edition of his Magnificat in C major. Telemann probably composed this impressive work for the dedication of the organ in the Leipzig Neukirche in 1704. Like Bach's well-known Magnificat, it is scored for three trumpets and timpani. For ambitious church choirs, the work is really worthwhile, and is also a most effective piece for audiences to enjoy. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3914300.

The harmonic turns and piano configurations in La vie anterieure - the former life - seem almost exuberantly lyrical. At the beginning, the archaic sounds and words of the male choir conjure up a dream world that is soon flooded with the power of the waves and the rich polyphonic harmony of the choir and the piano. With the outcry C'est la que j'ai vecu! [I have lived there] which expresses the fervent yearning to return to a past life, the collective desperately reinforces the longing for the past. Once more, the women's choir conjures up this lost paradise in an undulating soft sound before the desolate sadness is pierced by the power of the music of the piano postlude, creating a moment that is completely in the present.

Cædmon's Hymn is the oldest English of known authorship. It was written in the seventh century by the poet Cædmon, supposedly from divine inspiration. My setting, for SATB chorus and organ, begins with four members of the chorus speaking the opening line of the poem in Old English, the intention being to evoke the atmosphere of the time and place of the hymn’s creation. The work was commissioned by and is dedicated to the South Bend (Indiana) Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, Music Director, and David Eicher, organist, and was premiered in 2018.SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 9' Composed: 2018 Published by: WMC Music (BMI) Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Mozart's Missa in C K. 317, erroneously dubbed the Coronation Mass, is among the most popular and most often performed works in this genre. The autograph of the Mass, which in many respects is very enlightening, was regarded as having been lost following the end of World War II, but was discovered at the end of the 1970s, it is preserved among the musical treasures contained in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow. Ulrich Leisinger, the editor, prepared the edition based upon what is, without a doubt, the only authentic source, although additionally in the Critical Report he has also consulted an early copy of the Mass (by Fugerl), since such later copies often help to clarify questions concerning historical performance practice. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4061800.
