Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names†for having taken on human form to die on the cross. The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major, a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,†and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!†For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem. This six-verse hymn is based on the melody Herzlich tut mich verlangen, which Buxtehude used both for the solo cantata Herzlich tut mich verlangen BuxWV 42 and for a chorale prelude entitled Ach Herr, mich armen Sunder BuxWV 178. Apart from the Amen, with coloratura decoration, the text is set in a simple four-part texture. The accompanying violins are used in the prelude and interludes. This piece exists in a tabulatur copied by Duben before June 1687. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3601800.

Here is the classic Latin text for episcopal visits presented in a fairly easy, but glorious, setting for any parish choir of some substance—that is, one that can mimic the power and style of the brass and organ fanfare. Consider it an ideal short prelude of acclamation before the opening hymn. Short and sweet—and powerful. Percussion part is for timpani and cymbals. .

3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) for mixed choir SATB was composed by Per Norgard in 1985-86. The work consists of music composed to 3 poems, e.g. Gunnar Ekelof 'Komposition (Composition), Thoger Larsen 'Strandvalmue'('Beach Poppy') Rainer Maria Rilke 'Die Parke'('The Parks') Programme note Just as the three movements in their succession move from the sea (Ekelof), across the beach (Larsen) and into the country, to the parks (Rilke), in an analogous way each of the three movements in their point of departure is hymnic in character - but later on moves into the more varied and complex tone paths of the inner regions of themind. 3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) is sung in Swedish (1. Komposition”, Gunnar Ekelof), in Danish (2. Strandvalmue”, Thoger Larsen) and in German (3. “Die Parke”, R.M. Rilke). The work could be performed in a programme with 'Prelude to Breaking', performed after this instrumental piece. Per Norgard .

Gounod's Messe a la memoire de Jeanne d'Arc was composed in 1887 for a festive mass in Reims to commemorate the arrival of the national heroine in the city on the occasion of the coronation of Charles VII in 1429. Performed a cappella or only accompanied by an organ, vast stretches of the work are in an archaic style in the tradition of Palestrina. The royal procession into the cathedral is conveyed in the splendid Prelude at the beginning, which was performed at the premiere by eight trumpets, three trombones, and organ. In the performance material, the present edition also offers a version of the movement for piano and organ. For the Offertoire, Gounod composed a cantilena for violin and organ (or piano), which is also included in the edition, as a Vision of Jeanne d'Arc. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2709600.
