The stars are aligned for Stephen Sondheim's 1981 Broadway â??failureâ?, which, through the eyes of time (which the musical expertly navigates, to an astounding effect), has been re-appraised as a under appreciated masterpiece from the late composer. Jason Robert Brown takes the many permutations of the main theme and pares them down to this exquisite and genuine choral arrangement.

This poem has long been a favorite of singers due to its deep passion and expressive imagery, not to mention the warm vowels at the end of each line. In this artistic setting, Greg Gilpin incorporates a contemporary harmonic palette, expressive tempo nuances, and elegant dynamic shading to form a colorful garden of sound. The final chord suggests the rose/thorn quality of love, as singers sustain sweet dissonance. Give special consideration to the S.S.A. voicing---the romantic text may have great appeal to your ladies.

In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. Score available separately - see item CA.4003800.

Taken from the Sarum rite, this text has long been the object of many composers' affection and in this case, is allowed to take shape within a moderately narrow vocal range. The uncomplicated imitation within the music enhances the simplicity of this ancient prayer as each part sings each phrase, rhythmically uniting at the final request: God be at my end..

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio - St. Paul , op. 36 - in 1836, at the age of twenty-seven.The first version, which was premiered on 22 May 1836, was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version, which at the same time served as the basis for the published version, was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham . The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score, Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner, who later denigrated Mendelssohn, was full of admiration. Today, St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music. This Urtext edition of the oratorio, edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work, the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. This gives not only an insight into the history of the composition of the work, but also, with the complete performing material, into the performance of the original version. The appendices (first version) which appear in the full score and vocal score are not contained in this choral score. The full score and vocal score include the German and English texts of the oratorio. The vocal score is by Mendelssohn.- Urtext edition, representing the latest musicological research- Vocal texts in German and English- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

According to statements by the composer, the Missa sacra is suitable for both worship services, as well as for concerts, and at the same time it is not difficult to perform. The expressive harmonies, precise use of counterpoint and its concise themes show that the Missa sacra is a highly romantic work which belongs among the great masterpieces of 19th century sacred music. Following a performance in 1861 Clara Schumann wrote to Johannes Brahms: The Kyrie is deeply moving, and as if cast from one mold; in the Sanctus individual movements had such a wonderful sonorous effect that chills ran down my spine. For the present edition Zsigmond Szathmary has made a new arrangement for organ of the original orchestra accompaniment. Additional editions in the Series Choir & Organ.
