An expert choral director as well as a highly regarded composer, Ronald Corp has written unaccompanied SATB settings of three famous medieval carol texts, Myn Lyking, The Virgin's Cradle Hymn (Dormi Jesu) and Quem Pastores Laudavere. The idiom is modern yet accessible, with an ear for stylish harmony that includes both modal progressions and colourful added chords, embroidered in some rich yet untaxing divisi writing. The carols may be performed as separate items or as a group, the first two being cradle songs for the Nativity, the third also suited to the celebration of Epiphany on 6 Janaury. Ronald Corp is Founder and Artistic Director of the New London Orchestra and New London Children's Choir, and Musical Director of the London Chorus and Highgate Choral Society.

Both as composer and conductor, Ronald Corp is steeped in the English choral tradition, and in A Spotless Rose he has traversed by his own path the hallowed ground of words immortalised by Herbert Howells. Corp's own music, chordal yet contrapuntal, and likewise redolent in its modality of a distant past 'of ancient seers' foreshowing', flows smoothly in flexible rhythm, each voice a shapely strophic melody. Mindful of the famous close of Howells's setting, Corp concludes with an exquisite ending all of his own. A Spotless Rose was written for the Highgate Choral Society, who gave the world premiere on 2 December 2017 at St Michael's Church, Highgate.

Among the UK's most noted choral composers and conductors, Ronald Corp does not hesitate to bring his own musical vision to a much-loved poem by the sixteenth-century lutenist songwriter and 'Doctor of Physick' Thomas Campion, following the example not only of Campion himself but also of Charles Wood and Hubert Parry. Eschewing the manner of Parry's resonant polyphony for a simple harmonised setting in a flexible verbal rhythm reflecting the measure of the words, this is a heartfelt plea for spiritual release uttered in a quietly elegiac tone, in which the serenity of the entreaty rather than its pathos is to the fore.

Part of the longer hymn Pange lingua by Venantius Fortunatus (c.540-c.600), the Crux fidelis features in the Adoration of the Cross during the solemn liturgical actions of Good Friday, and at Lauds during Passiontide. The reverence and awe of the words resonate in the poised strophes and silences of Ronald Corp's new setting for SATB, a memorable addition to the repertoire of music for times of penitence, and to the surprisingly small corpus of interpretations, including those by Lennox Berkeley, Adrian Willaert, John Dunstable, and King John IV of Portugal (attributed), of this text in particular.
