The Hathor Suite for soprano, baritone, mixed chorus and ensemble (cor anglais, flute, harp and percussion) is Bergman's most colourful works. The first movement is to the goddess' power and glory. In the second movement the glissandos and changing vowel-sounds of the chorus wind around a harp ostinato. The ecstatic third movement is based on an ostinato rhythm. In the fourth movement the vibraphone and female chorus have a chord which gradually expands to include all twelve chromatic notes. The fifth movement celebrates the goddess as 'a lady of the dance, mistress of the music'. Text: Siegfried Schott after ancient Egyptian texts (German), duration 18 minutes.

A unique edition - all readings at a glanceThis new edition, in contrast to the array of Bach Cello Suite publications available today, has made use of all the five sources which have come down to us. The basis for this edition is the most reliable of the sources, the manuscript copy in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach. All variant readings from the four other sources are clearly laid out for performance. Cellists now have the possibility of rendering performances based on just one of the five sources as well as the option of combining the sources in a mixed version. This flyer takes you through our various editions of Bach's Cello Suites.

The composition of Verba Ecclesiastes begun in 2002 as a result of a comission from my friend Gary Graden. For many years I've found those words from the Old Testament very fascinating - as everyone knows, I'm not alone. Vanity of vanities! All is vanity! Writers, painters and filmmakers have for centuries been dealing with the subject and I found it high time to set the famous words to music. The suite, for soloists, choir and violoncello, consists of six movements, each one enlighting a different view of life and afterlife, and also, as Matthew Arnold puts it of human misery. Yet the suite is full of hope and humanity, specially recognizable in the two central parts, Dulce lumen and Omnia tempus habent. The music was completed in 2009. (Michael Waldenby).

The motets and choral pieces, composed with the distinctive features of the Madeleine organ in mind, enchant with their colourful, floating harmonies and convey a certain intimacy even with their ritualized Latin texts. These works are very well suited for performances by small vocal ensembles. A novelty is the inclusion of the double bass part (ad libitum) which does not appear consistently in the first editions but corresponds to the musical practice at the Madeleine.Numerous gems such as the “Cantique de Jean Racine†or the “Messe basse†are published in performing editions based on the musical text of the “Gabriel Faur – Å’uvres complètesâ€.

With a relaxed lilt, a 4-note motive makes up the first portion of the verses by cantor or unison voices. Verse 3 offers an altered echo for two soloists, with the same material repeated for the choir on the last verse. Additional instrumentation was originally conceived for soprano recorder or pennywhistle, but works well with flute, oboe, or other C instrument. The text of comfort is particularly suited to the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A.

The Glagolitic Mass, one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music, has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge. The recently published scholarly-critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes: the “September 1927†version (BA 6863) which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928 (BA 6862). This second version was then revised further and published after Janácek’s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the “final authorised versionâ€, it has been newly edited for this publication which is based on the engraver’s copy of the score prepared by Janácek’s regular copyist Václav Sedlácek. The “final authorised version†is the significant version and most suited to performance purposes. The instrumentation is richer, it is more straightforward to rehearse and several important passages are more coherent than in the earlier version. It is the later version that is presented in the vocal score. The Old Church Slavonic text has been prepared by the slavicist Radoslav Vecerka.

Michel Guimont supplies four different refrains to pair with intimate verses adapted from Jesus’ Farewell Discourse at the Last Supper (John 14—17). Originally written for the ordination of a bishop, the expanded piece for SATB choir, cantor, and assembly is especially well suited for the Easter Season. The accompaniment is compatible for both organ and piano.
