The Hochzeitskantate (Wedding Cantata) BWV 195 was performed by Bach from around 1730 at various wedding celebrations in different forms, and was evidently also lent out for performances further afield. The only surviving version of the work dates from the last years of Bach's life. The opulently-scored first part begins and ends with grand choral movements, and Bach scored both parts for soloists and for chorus. At the centre of the cantata is an exceptionally sensitive bass aria, probably one of Bach's most modern vocal compositions of all. A chorale movement (Nun danket all and bringet Ehr/ Now thank we all and offer praise) with obbligato horns concludes the cantata as the second part after the consummation. Soli SATB, SATB Choir, 2 Ob, Tl (Eh), Fg, 2 Vl, Va, Bc SKU: CA.3118655 Cantata for the 7th Sunday after Trinity. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Uwe Wolf. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Advent. Choral Score. Composed 1723. BWV 186. 8 pages. Duration 40 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.186/55. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3118655). ISBN 9790007186562. Key: G minor / c dorian. Language: German/English. The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Soli SATB, SATB Choir, Ob (auch Obdc), 2 Vl, Va, Bc - Level 3 SKU: CA.3108062 Cantata for Reformation Day. First Leipzig version. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Klaus Hofmann. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal; Hymns by Martin Luther: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott. Ein Feste Burg (Erste Leipz. Fassung). Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Reformation day. Single Part, Violin 2. Composed 1728/31. BWV 80b. 12 pages. Duration 30 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.080/62. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3108062). ISBN 9790007206802. Key: D major. Language: German/English. Text: Luther, Martin / Franck, Salomo. The Reformation cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80b, published by Carus-Verlag for the first time in a practical performing edition, remained unknown to Bach scholars until well into the 20th century. The evidence of its existence is three fragments of the first folio of Bach's score, which can be dated to the years 1728-1731. By contrast, the long-familiar expanded new version of the cantata with its powerful opening chorus (BWV 80) dates from the 1730s or 1740s. It only survives in a copy of Bach's score, but this allows conclusions to be drawn about the history of the versions; thus, by using the fragments mentioned above, it has been possible to reconstruct the first version. This result is a Bach cantata which is less extensive and in a more concise normal format, with reduced wind instruments. A relaxed, contrapuntal four-part chorale movement with the first and last verses of the Lutheran hymn forms the framework, and the other movements are the same as in the later new version. This simpler cantata is also entirely suitable for celebrating Reformation Day, as Bach did around 1730. Orchestra STB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 oboes, [horn], 2 violins, viola, basso continuo, organ obligato - Grade 3 SKU: CA.3107312 Cantata for the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Reinhold Kubik. Arranged by Paul Horn. German title: Herr, wie du willt. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Epiphany. Single Part, Violin 2. Composed 1724. BWV 73. 4 pages. Duration 17 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.073/12. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3107312). ISBN 9790007044671. Key: G minor / c minor. Language: German/English. In 1724, Bach composed the cantata Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir [Lord, as you will, do unto me] BWV 73 for the third Epiphany Sunday. Like in some other cantatas from the first annual cycle, the opening movement contains a part for corno which would in fact have been unplayable on an instrument of that era - probably also a reason why Bach allocated this part to the organ in a repeat performance (both variants can be performed using the Carus edition). The unusual choral movement, interrupted by recitatives, is based quite substantially on a short four-note motive which is introduced by the horn; at the end of the chorus, the choir sings it to the words Herr, wie du willt [Lord, as you will] - an avowal which also quite substantially characterizes other movements of the cantata. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Uwe Wolf. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Trinity. Study score. Composed 1723. BWV 25. 40 pages. Duration 16 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.025/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3102507). ISBN 9790007092931. Language: German/English. This cantata for the 14th Sunday after Trinity was composed in August 1723 and is from Bach's first cycle of cantatas for Leipzig. It is distinguished by its unique opening chorus, which is a four-part choral fugue with independent instrumental parts in which Bach has interwoven a four-part chorale (Herzlich tut mich verlangen) played by the winds. This is an artistic combination which expands to as many as ten real parts. The second aria Offne meinen schlechten Liedern, is distinguished by an unusual instrumental coloring in which the soprano and the strings, supported by the oboes, are joined by 3 recorders. The edition is the product of a new evaluation of the source situation (see Bach-Jahrbuch 2006). This motet, no matter how popular it is, presents Bach scholars with a few puzzles: is it really by Bach? Somehow the text doesn't fit with the notes, at least not so that it's comfortable to sing.
