Colorful choral sonorities emerge over a steady heartbeat piano part in this contemporary treatment of the traditional Latin text. Composer Jacob Narverud remains faithful to the tonic scale degree throughout, creating plenty of ethereal cluster chords as the piece unfolds. A contrasting spoken section quotes a biblical verse about perseverance. Impressive in concert or contest.

Handel's famous “Sarabande” serves as the opening theme to this stirring Lenten anthem. The text comes from Avis Christiansen and matches the tune well. The switch to D major permits a newly composed melody to emerge, one of assurance. Returning to Handel's strain, the piece ends in strength and praise.

The text of the Responsorium O magnum mysterium, to be sung liturgically in the midnight darkness, describes the mystery of Christ's incarnation, from darkness into light. In three sections, the music increases from a piano sound to the concluding Halleluja. In ever-new harmonies, the lyrical-Gregorian motifs emerge in sequences of sixths within the dense, four-part writing. The musical language is modal-harmonic with constantly surprising turns. This highly atmospheric piece is good to sing, but requires a reasonably-sized choir because the work doesn't give the voices any opportunity to rest.

Vs. 2-5 Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2.
The words, Surely thou hast tasted that the Lord is good, open the anthem. This gentle and lyrical section, marked by dialogue between the sections of the choir, unfolds and eventually reaches a climax on the words precious in the sight of God. A quick, energetic and imitative middle section soon emerges to proclaim the words, Come, and let yourselves be built, as living stones, into a spiritual temple. Here the spirit of medieval music, the building stones for Western music, is invoked. After the anthem’s primary climax is reached on the words Jesus Christ, a solo soprano emerges from the choral texture to close this work with a serene Amen. The first performance of Dan Locklair’s anthem, In the sight of God took place on Sunday 4 October 2009. The occasion was Dedication Sunday, and the text was selected by John Scott from The First Letter of Peter, vv 2-5. Professor Locklair has provided us with a delightful addition to our repertoire at St Thomas. The work is grateful to sing, well written for voices, lyrical in style with a well-crafted sense of architecture and climax. In every sense it is an enjoyable piece for the choir, quite approachable, and judging from the many positive comments I heard afterwards from members of the congregation, it was very well received. -- Reflections on the premiere by John Scott, Director of Music, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 4' Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2, vs. 2-5 Composed: 2009 Published by: Subito Music Publishing Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Text: Angier Brock.
SATB Chorus, Organ Duration: 7' Text: Angier Brock Composed: 2010 Published by: Subito Music Publishing YouTube: Ms. Brock’s moving poem is lyrical throughout. Even in its beautiful originality, the poem invokes The Book of Common Prayer and biblical scripture (the latter through references to dust and breath from Genesis 2 to the final line of the poem invoking the opening of Psalm 62). Ms. Brock’s poetry is also filled with wonderful twists on traditional texts (such as in the creative and reverse naming of the Trinity in speaking of Inventing Wind, Generous Christ, and Luminous God). Musically, the main melodic material of the piece is immediately heard on a solo organ color accompanied by organ strings over a recurring pedal pulse on the pitch C. The chorus soon enters with the first stanza of the text. As this stanza unfolds, the harmony starts to gradually change as the pulsing pedal rhythm begins to move upward by step. An organ interlude, reflective of the opening introduction, soon emerges (though now over a C-sharp recurring pedal pulse), and leads to a similar choral setting as found in stanza one. As the poem’s second stanza moves forward, it eventually folds into the more harmonically rich stanza three. A fast, dance-like section evolves at Inventing Wind, what a lively dance your energy creates! eventually bringing the work to its climax point. The spirit of dance soon subsides and leads to a quiet and gentle close on the words …for you alone my soul in silence waits. Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Orlando composer Bob Schaefer always brings out the best in choirs with his musically compelling liturgical works. The images he portrays in each unique composition serve to support the particular liturgical day or ritual action. In this eucharistic anthem he makes use of staggered vocal entrances, creating a wash of sound as the melody first emerges from the lower voices.

For SATB and organ This is a jubilant, richly-textured anthem. Accessible and uplifting, the piece is embroidered throughout with references to Vaughan Williams's revered hymn tune 'Sine Nomine'; this eventually emerges in its entirety, embellished with a triumphant descant and short passage for congregation.

Everyone Sang was written for a wedding blessing at Wells Cathedral on 26th May 2007. The choir on that occasion featured many singers from the operatic world and this, combined with the emotional nature of the occasion, explains something of its ecstatic style. The poem is truly beautiful and offers much opportunity for word-setting. Opening in unison, the musical material follows the wonderful images of the poem leading to a shattering climax for everyone's voice was suddenly lifted. A warm chord emerges for the setting sun before the mood darkens slightly for the following lines before the final pages of profound peace; the singing will never be done is repeated until almost inaudible and finally left hanging in space. An excellent addition to the remembrance and war commemoration repertoire for use in concert hall or church, especially during the centenary commemorations of the First World War.

Sometimes profundity emerges through simplicity. Composer Matthew Emery specializes in making musical statements that carry all the harmonic weight of a divisi choir, while using only four voice parts. This meditative piece matches his musical artistry with the wisdom of polymath Rabindranath Tagore. Sing it through on sounds without words, then add the text, and you will be transported.

The best way to describe this piece might be to call it a modern day Renaissance motet. Beginning with a Latin chant, then accompanied by a pedal tone, you may be convinced it is a song from the ages. But soon a solo quartet emerges, then the entire choir, and the modern day harmonies and rhythms ensue. But the character remains as an appropriate number for a madrigal dinner feast. Joyful and exuberant, this is a delightful Christmas selection for advanced high school and college choirs. Medium in difficulty.

A time-honored poem brings the promise of spring into an insightful message of faith in this artfully composed anthem. With classic purity, the song emerges out of a delicate pattern from the piano. The choral writing uses unison and two-part textures mingled with fuller sounds for both clarity and power. Changes in tempo and a wide dynamic vocabulary invite choirs to linger on each precious phrase, sharing the abundant life that is ours through grace.
