In this piece for unaccompanied SATB choir, fervent, dance-like music appears side by side with fear and awe, producing a dramatic contrast. The work was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral and by Mrs Ruth Daniel on behalf of St. John's College, Cambridge, for performances during Advent 1997. There were simultaneous first performances on 29th November 1997, given by the Choir of Winchester Cathedral conducted by David Hill, and the choir of St. John's College conducted by Christopher Robinson in Cambridge.

Here is an invitation for “the Love that casts out†fear and sin to enter into our souls. Much of the music is characterized by an introduction of a phrase by the men’s voices, which is minimally echoed by the women. The vocal lines are simple—no hidden surprises—but the overall sound is lush and majestic, then closing with a hushed unison choir.

The comforting text from Isaiah 43: Thus says the Lord: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine provides the inspiration for Bradley Ellingboe's finely crafted anthem. The brief declamatory opening leads into a more lyrical but lively main section which expresses confidence in God's presence and protection.

Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. Score available separately - see item CA.3108100.

Latin.
The text for the choral work 'Hominis dies' is partly form the book of psalms, partly from Isaiah in the Latin translation of the Bible. The words are relevant today - they are about the fate of humanity - our fear of war and destruction, violence and polution. The choral work is divided in three parts, all of them introduced with a Halleluja. A Halleluja is most often a praise, but that is not the case in this work, where the suppressed and oppressed manking with this work express desperation and sorrow, but also hope.

Homilius is known for having always searched for new forms in order to avoid any schematic pattern. Thus, one looks in vain in the present cantata for arias. The opening choir is introduced by two choral groups: One calls to take up the fight against the devil, while the other fearfully hesitates and finally, in the chorale Jesus Christus, wohn uns bei agrees to join in. Following each of the three stanzas of the embellished chorale, in a recitative the hesitant one is given courage before he also takes up arms, in a confident final chorus.
