The Glagolitic Mass, one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music, has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge. The recently published scholarly-critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes: the “September 1927†version (BA 6863) which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928 (BA 6862). This second version was then revised further and published after Janácek’s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the “final authorised versionâ€, it has been newly edited for this publication which is based on the engraver’s copy of the score prepared by Janácek’s regular copyist Václav Sedlácek. The “final authorised version†is the significant version and most suited to performance purposes. The instrumentation is richer, it is more straightforward to rehearse and several important passages are more coherent than in the earlier version. It is the later version that is presented in the vocal score. The Old Church Slavonic text has been prepared by the slavicist Radoslav Vecerka.

Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello. The cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen [You will weep and wail] BWV 103 for Jubilate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. A large-scale choral movement on Jesus's words quoted from the Sunday gospel reading opens the cantata; the choir is interrupted by a bass arioso - the vox Christi. Both arias are introduced by a recitative with arioso conclusion; in each, exquisite solo instruments are deployed: flauto piccolo in the contralto aria and trumpet in the tenor aria. Score available separately - see item CA.3110300.

Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2740300.
