Dan Forrest's three settings of Hallelujah Psalms (for SATB choir and piano) range from invigorating to deeply touching to dancing for joy! Each movement begins and ends with the statement Hallelu Yah, just as the three Psalms do. Optional percussion (inspired by the text of Psalm 150 and the scriptural account the psalmist Asaph playing the cymbals; 1-2 players) adds an additional layer of sparkling energy. May be performed as a set as individual movements, suitable for worship or concert settings.School, Church, Community AdultCollegiateScripture reference: Psalms.

The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy. Score available separately - see item CA.4009800.

May of 2012 saw celebrations for the refurbishment of Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian, Scotland, including the first performance of this piece performed by the National Youth Choir of Scotland. Set for SATB choir, organ, and harp, the text is Psalm 150 from The Scottish Psalter of 1650. Full of exuberant syncopations, the music reflects the jubilance of the Psalm.
