The text, Isaiah 9:6, is found as the offertory for Christmas in the Roman Missal. The music is pure classical period—think Haydn, to whom this piece, incidentally, has been wrongly attributed. Scored for organ and choir, with three strings and two trombones, it includes both Latin and English texts. SATB. GIA is pleased to offer this edited and translated version of the Christmas offertory Parvulus filius by Franz Schneider.  Based on research from the Melk archive of the Benedictine monastery in Lower Austria, Jane Hettrick has prepared a fantastic edition of this little-known historical gem.  The text is provided in both Latin and English, and a continuo of two violins, cello, and two trombones (which double the alto and tenor voices) is also available.  Editorial slurs and articulations are also provided.

In Jubilate Deo Kim André Arnesen goes back to the music to which he was introduced from a very early age as a chorister at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. There he sang regularly in concerts and services, and many of his favourite works come from the repertoire for choir and organ. Although the composer has not written a lot for those forces, they are perfect for the character andemotions portrayed in this piece. The joy and exuberance of the music reflects the Latin text (the opening two verses of Psalm 100: “Rejoice in God, all the earth”, and verses from Psalm 57: “I will sing and make music”), with dancing, syncopated rhythms and a more solemn, soothing middle section. A real showstopper, made even more effective by the optional percussion (tambourine and hand drum – an extracted percussion part is included in the vocal score).

Paul Sjolund and Fred Bock are two of the great writers from the late 20th century. Originally set for TTBB voices, Richard Nichols has revoiced it for SATB choir. The results are fabulous. A classic Thanksgiving hymn is reborn and ready for worship.

Composed by Marcel Dupre, Laudate is the last of the Four Motets. Written for a mixed SATB and two organs, the lyrics are in Latin and the volume includes all the scores: female soprano and alto, male tenor and bass and the two organ scores. The piece is introduced by the two organs and the male voices are the first to start singing (tenor, followed quickly by the bass). The full SATB then sings together, sometimes alternated by the organs and the organ parts include an outstanding toccata. Laudate is an amazing way to finish this series with a triumphant and glorious celebration of God. The organ scores require some upper intermediate skills, with the knowledge of pedals and the vocal parts, quite demanding, evolve in polyphony and polyrhythm. Marcel Dupre is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the works of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Olivier Messiaen, Jean Langlais and Pierre Cochereau amongst others.

Vincent Novello was a British composer and Organist who gave the Novello publishing company its first embryonic form. Here he arranges Rule, Britannia! for Voice SATB with Piano accompaniment to introduce some contrapuntal interest in the verse.When 18th century British composer Thomas Arne included his song Rule, Britannia! in a masque based on the life of Alfred the Great that was presented at Cliveden, the country home of Frederick, Prince of Wales, he could not have imagined that more than two hundred seventy years later his ditty would be known throughout the British Isles and beyond. Rule, Britannia! is widely used in the Royal Navy and British Army and is featuredeach year at the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall as a national sing-along.At the time of writing, the Dutch actually 'ruled the waves,' so this song was more an exhortation than a status report. The lyrics were also a statement of civil liberty. Since Cromwell's time, Britain had had a standing army which could be turned against the native population. A standing navy, however, existed solely to protect the nation from invaders, protecting a free populace.
