On 20 December 1823 Helmina von Chezy'sRosamundereceived its premiere performance at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. Unfortunately the Viennese version of this drama with ghosts, pirates, attempted poisonings and other horrifying ingredients has not survived - unlike Schubert's popular incidental music which also includes choruses and dances. This music was already highly praised by contemporary critics, with special acknowledgment given tothe genius of this much-loved master. As evidence of its popularity, the overture and theHunters' Chorushad to be encored at the premiere. Now Barenreiter is issuing one of Schubert's best-known compositions in a complete vocal score with piano reduction.

Biber's Requiem in F minor is amongst the most impressive settings of the Requiem Mass of the 17th century. The exact reason for the composition of the Requiem, which can be dated to 1692, is not known. The dark key color of F minor is emphasized by the instrumental scoring for two violins, three violas, basso continuo and three trombones (colla parte with the chorus). The vivid language of the Requiem text offered Biber a wealth of possibilities for expressive, musical interpretation. The intensity of the musical language used to portray lamenting and mourning is impressive. In the course of publication of the Biber Requiem, surprisingly the primary source, which until now had been thought to be missing, resurfaced and the edition could be prepared based on this astonishing discovery. This is a work of mid-level difficulty for a choir and with the clear disposition of the string parts it is well suited for performance by amateur choirs. In 1856, the year in which Mozart's one-hundredth birthday was elaborately celebrated, Franz Lachner composed the Requiem in F minor op. 146. It became his most well-known and most important work. Lachner's intensive study of Mozart's music on the occasion of the commemorative year lends credence to that fact that it was not inspired by a personal loss, such as a death in the family or among his friends. Although closer examination proves that his music differed essentially from Mozart's, Lachner's work shows a clear expression of his admiration for him. The parallels between the two Requiems range from the characteristics of the organization of the text and the formal structure, to the similar treatment of individual sections, themes and motives.
