This 5-movement, multi-media choral drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. The journey of those who sacrificed becomes a story we can relive and honor. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange original music and traditional spirituals in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind. The spirituals are accompanied with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the sub-Saharan African musical tradition of connecting with ancestors and with the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. This is a work that will move an audience to tears. Medium to Advanced. The Journey of Harriet Tubman has generated a much needed discussion of African American enslavement and and cultural appropriation. The composer has dedicated half of his royalties from this work to The Equal Justice Initiative, a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. Matsushita's setting of a hymn for Pentecost is a dialog between women's choir and piano: while the choir develops its melodies from the Gregorian hymn, the piano provides a counterpoint with the minimalistic sounds of fourth and fifths, together with short independent motives related to the text of the hymn. Corresponding to the chorale, the meter changes continually, as if floating. The choir is treated homophonically throughout and, in preparation for the climax of the piece it is briefly divided into six parts at the words pacemque dones protinus (true peace bring unto us). One again Matsushita proves himself a master of economy in his use of compositional means; thus his works of new church music are appealing, effective, and they express humility.

Giovanni Gabrieli's Se cantano gl'augelli comes from a collection of madrigals entitled Il trionfo di Dori. Each madrigal is scored for six voices and each ends with the text Viva la bella Dori (Long live fair Dori). This late sixteenth-century collection of madrigals enjoyed great success and was the model of the famous English collection of madrigals entitled, The Triumphes of Oriana. The GIA Historical Music Series edited by Dennis Shrock, presents repertoire suitable for performance by public school, college and university, church, and community ensembles, with the purpose of making available to today’s conductors lesser-known and previously difficult-to-procure historical masterpieces. The music, drawn from the Renaissance through the Romantic eras, is in performance editions based on the most current and rigorous scholarly research. The musical scores reflect original intent of notation, with all editorial markings and emendations clearly identified as such. In addition, preface material accompanying the music contains literal translations of foreign language texts and information regarding the lives of the composers, genres, and relevant performance practices. Dennis Shrock is Director of Choral Activities at Texas Christian University. He has been called one of the top choral scholars in the United States and has received a number of awards for his work. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Westminster Choir College and both master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University. .

Matsushita's composition draws on elements of the Gregorian antiphon. It begins in unison Gregorian chant, as was typical of Renaissance motets, and the beginning of new lines of text are also derived from Gregorian material. Matsushita juxtaposes a syllabic, rhythmic declamation with this melody, constantly alternating bars with even and odd numbers of beats, the octave C' - C'' constantly repeated by the outer parts and leading towards the climax at the text nomen Jesu. After ascending D major arpeggios, the central word Jesu radiates into F sharp major, the following repetition in the compass of an octave on C is more tranquil, ending peacefully with an F major chord, ppp.
