Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri and traveled to Chicago as a young woman, where she grew acquainted with Harriet Monroe and the literary circle around Poetry. Teasdale wrote seven books of poetry in her lifetime and received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives of beauty, love, life, and death. Either of these pieces would be a great introduction to a slightly chromatic style of choral writing—enough of a challenge to be interesting, but not so difficult as to leave the choir disillusioned! Outside of a couple places, the range for all voices is well within a comfortable span.

“Ungewisses Licht†is an a cappella choral work by Manfred Trojahn. In it, the composer incorporates text fragments from a poem by Joseph Christian von Zedlitz once set to music by Robert Schumann. The piece lets us hear finely fanned out, rubbing surfaces, gently brought to an inner swaying by changing seconds - this is how the Esslinger Zeitung describes the sound character of the piece.
