Magnificat by Magdalena Zimmermann for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) plays with harmony, rhythm and dynamics. The unexpected continuation of melodies by the voices, combined with shifted rhythms, engages the audience's attention until the last bar and results in a rich sound. With its soft and gentle ending, Magnificat as a prayer of Mary exudes, at the same time, a sense of calmness and gentleness. The work is rhythmically and harmonically demanding, which is why the singers need to be steady keeping beat and intonation. Once Magnificat has been rehearsed, it is suitable for concerts as well as Sunday services.

Artfully combining the old with the new - that is one of the hallmarks of Alwin M. Schronen. That this versatile balancing actor andbearer of numerous compositional prizes succeeds in mastering this artistic balancing act, he proves once again in his sacred choralcomposition Hodie Christus natus est. This Latin-speaking work for 8-part mixed choir a cappella (SSAATTBB) is based on the antiphonto the Magnificat of the Christmas Vespers. Schronen opens his Christmas song with the literal intonation of the traditional Gregorian melody. After this beginning, alternating between male and female voices, the composer lets the entire choir join in the jubilation of thanks for the birth of Jesus. He manages to lift the listener with his very own musical language in other heavenly realms. A wonderful, but at the same time vocally demanding piece of music, which is equally suitable for the use of church music asit is for concert use.

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri and traveled to Chicago as a young woman, where she grew acquainted with Harriet Monroe and the literary circle around Poetry. Teasdale wrote seven books of poetry in her lifetime and received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives of beauty, love, life, and death. Gaetano Lorandi's eight-part 'Ave verum' for mixed a cappella choir was awarded a prize by the jury of the International Federation of Choral Music in 2013 for its high repertoire value and its great elaborateness. Based on the Latin prayer 'Ave verum' from the 14th century, this sacred a cappella choral work captures the special atmosphere of the mystery of the Eucharist in a musically impressive way. Characterized by dense chromaticism and successive changes of time and dynamics, it is based on a sophisticated handling of the text and a subtle musical language. Thus, the work is a demanding addition to existing Ave verum settings, both with regard to the music and to the performance practice.

Szymon Godziemba-Trytek, born in Poland in 1988, already is one of the acclaimed choral composers of our time and has been awarded numerous prizes at national and international composition competitions, as e.g. in 2014 for his 'Miserere mei Deus, miserere mei', a musical setting of Psalm 56 for eight-part mixed a-cappella choir. It is the effective antiphony between female and male voices, four-part homophonic passages including four bars for two solo sopranos, rich dynamic nuances, staggered entries of the voices in imitation, and sound elements to be performed in an individual loop-like manner that make this sacred choral work special. For this work, the young composer was awarded the 3rd prize at the Composition Competition Musica Sacra.
