From his Album for Male Voices, Op. 30, a set of 12 Norwegian folksongs set for chorus with male leads, The Great Angelic Host was arranged for double mixed chorus by Eyvind H. Bull, and has here been edited by Walter Aschenbrenner. We are pleased to make this exquisite choral work available once again. David Monrad Johansen, in his published life of Grieg, was moved to say, In The Great Angelic Host true religious feeling has been given the purest expression. This composition shows what wonderful material we have right at hand on which to base a future church music for Norway..

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Based on the well-known bible text “Sing unto the Lord a new song†(Psalm 96:1-3), this upbeat composition with strong dynamics and flowing block chords alternating with fast-paced polyphony brings across this joyful message and enthuses singers.Originally conceived for male choir, women’s voices have now been added so that this version for mixed choir presents a further dimension of colour. This version also makes it possible to divide the choir into two groups, one for women and another for men, and to have them sing either together or as separate units. The version for mixed choir was premiered in Uppsala Cathedral (Sweden) on 26 October 2013, with the Uppsala Cathedral Singers conducted by Ulric Andersson.“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings‘ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard’.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.â€MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. Heavenly Father was commissioned by Sydney Chamber Choir for a concert in 2022 which featured Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien. Melodic lines from Schütz’s work are used throughout Heavenly Father: the first soprano melody in the opening chorus at ‘Herr Gott Vater in Himmel’ is featured at the beginning and repeated throughout, as are the melodies, for example, at ‘Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt’, and at ‘seinem verklärten Leibe’, among other places. In a conversation about what this commission would be, it was agreed that the sense of the work would be about the circle of life expressed in Musikalische Exequien rather than about death itself. It is because of this ‘sense’ that the end of Heavenly Father is reversed, illustrating a musical circle: the lower voices sing the ‘Herr Gott Vater in Himmel’ phrase backwards, and the upper voices sing the melodies backwards that were sung by the lower voices at the beginning.

In the days of Roslawez, the use of lyrical texts in Russian choral music was an exception. Traditionally, sacred liturgical texts were preferred in choral singing. Roslawez composed only a few choral works anyway, so this excellent cantabile piece is a real treasure. The poem 'Na poljach' (In the Fields) was written by the Russian poet Pyotr Oreshin. Little solo parts answered by the tutti, charming harmonies and a floating rhythm result in an Impressionist tonal image. The piece is quite easy to sing and will bring pleasure to both performers and listeners.Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was among the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s. Treated more and more with hostility for political reasons and eventually barred from pursuing his career, he spent the last years of his life in poverty.

In Stacy Garrop’s inspired hands, divisi mixed chorus provides a rich palette of texture and color. Her setting intermingles three versions of the Hebrew folk tune, taking artistic advantage of contrasts between solo and tutti, homophony and grand antiphony, divisi men and divisi women, and the gradual braiding and unbraiding of Hebrew and English texts. LO YISA GOY is the explicitly anti-war Scriptural text better-known in its English translation that begins, “And they shall beat their swords into plowshares... nation shall not lift up a sword against nation.â€.When Jonathan Miller asked me to write two pieces for Chicago a cappella, I knew right away that I wanted to choose two songs from my own past. The first piece, Hava Nagila, is a celebratory song full of joy. I wanted the second work to contrast the first, and to this end, I chose the somber text of Lo Yisa Goy, a prayer for peace. I remember singing this song as a young child in Hebrew school and synagogue, always in context (at least in my congregation) of praying for the state of Israel. I think we’re at a particular point in which people in a lot of different nations could use such a prayer. For this reason, you’ll hear the words in both Hebrew and English. In my research of previous versions of the melody, I discovered three variants for the tune, all of which I have incorporated into my piece.

Latin. Text source: From the Eucharistic Liturgy of the Roman Rite. Scripture: Isaiah 6:3, Psalm 118:26, Matthew 21:9, Revelation 4:8.
An a cappella polyphonic setting based on the Sanctus chant of Mass XVIII. Though not particularly complex, the extensive divisi requires fairly sizeable forces, and the harmonic texture requires careful attention to intonation. The end result creates a powerfully rich sonority.

Her Music exudes openness and inclusivity, and it is in the choral settings where hope and positivity - two words that lie at the heart of her work - are most keenly felt. ... much of her recent work can be seen to be built on the solid foundations laid down on this impressively varied and diverse collection. If you aren't aware already, Briton Jacob Collier has firmly established himself as the preeminent composer, theorist, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist of the modern era. Collier's Grammy-winning arrangement of âMoon Riverâ is a thrilling exercise in form and style. A cappella arranger extraordinaire Paul Langford has taken Jacob's iconic arrangement and has meticulously set it to eight-to-twelve vocal parts on the page. While this would be one of the most difficult arrangements your choir could tackle, it would also turn out to be one of the most rewarding!

About 40 compositions, including half for accompanying and unaccompanied choir, are currently in the catalog of young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born 1992). After several national composition competitions, she won the 13th International Composition Competition Musica Sacra Nova with her Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed choir a cappella. The complex spiritual a cappella choir is based on the Gregorian chant of the same name (Psalm 89,2). Three principal structures are characteristic of this Latin-language choral piece: on the one hand, aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales, soundally supported by long-held organum-like notes taken from the Gregorian choral melody; As well as a renaissance-like polyphony, which is linked with modern harmony; And finally long static chords that blend into harmony and space. A wonderfully mystical-spherical composition, which also gives the individual performer the possibility of individual design through the ad libitum passages marked in the sheet music.

This setting of Christina Rossetti's poem “Then Shall Ye Shout†for unaccompanied double choir was commissioned by Help Musicians UK for its annual St Cecilia's Festival service and first performed by the Choirs of St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and Westminster Cathedral on 17 November 2021. Rossetti's text describes singers biding their time and staying silent until the moment they are able to come together again and sing, loudly and with passion. The piece commemorates the period in 2020 during which musicians were unable to perform due to lockdowns caused by the global pandemic.

Artfully combining the old with the new - that is one of the hallmarks of Alwin M. Schronen. That this versatile balancing actor andbearer of numerous compositional prizes succeeds in mastering this artistic balancing act, he proves once again in his sacred choralcomposition Hodie Christus natus est. This Latin-speaking work for 8-part mixed choir a cappella (SSAATTBB) is based on the antiphonto the Magnificat of the Christmas Vespers. Schronen opens his Christmas song with the literal intonation of the traditional Gregorian melody. After this beginning, alternating between male and female voices, the composer lets the entire choir join in the jubilation of thanks for the birth of Jesus. He manages to lift the listener with his very own musical language in other heavenly realms. A wonderful, but at the same time vocally demanding piece of music, which is equally suitable for the use of church music asit is for concert use.
