Every era hears and interprets Bach anew, and every era also evaluates the sources afresh and with new eyes. 40 years after the publication of the St. Matthew Passion in the New Bach Edition, Klaus Hofmann, Director of the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute Gottingen for many years and a contributing editor to the New Bach Edition, presents a new edition. Hofmann has placed the study of the sources at the service of musical practice and the detailed investigation of Bach's intentions. Bach scholars are well aware that Bach's original score and performance parts, running to almost 500 pages of music, are full of ambiguities and contradictions, particularly regarding articulation, which constantly challenge performers to new interpretations. Hofmann discusses these and other problems in a concise critical report, frequently arriving at new conclusions in the process. Extensive notes about parallel passages offer valuable help for interpretation. Special attention was devoted to the performance material with regard to practical needs. In 1988, GIA released Michael Joncas’s No Greater Love, a flexible mass setting offering cathedral-style music that was accessible to the singing assembly. Beautiful melodies enhanced by SATB choir and extensive orchestrations were the hallmark of this best-selling work. Now, Michael Joncas has revised this treasured setting using the 2010 Revised Order of Mass. The revision has a new through-composed Gloria that can be sung in unison during the Sundays of Ordinary Time, and for more festive occasions, one can add the optional instrumental and SATB choral parts. Also new to this setting are the gospel acclamation and a sung setting of the prayer of the faithful. The memorable congregational parts for the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei haven’t changed and the much-loved Holy, Holy has been adapted to accommodate the 2010 Revised Order of Mass text. The optional orchestration is now reduced and includes string quartet, flute, and oboe parts.

The tune SEGUNDO is intended specifically for hymn texts in long meter (LM, or 88 88) that can benefit from a sense of gravitas. In performance, the entire hymn may be sung by unison choir, or if desired, the beginning stanzas may be sung by one or more soloists or sections allowing the piece to build over its four stanzas, so that the last stanza, with its soaring descant, pours forth rife with emotion.

This canticle is appointed as the response to the fifth reading of the Easter Vigil, for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (year B), and is optional for the Baptism of the Lord (year B). Because the cantor always sings the call, various language configurations are possible.
