The three oratorios, the chorale cantatas, the large psalm settings, Lobgesang and other Mendelssohn sacred works with orchestra are famous, last but not least, on account of the variety and beauty of their choral settings. In the 19th century it was already common practice to arrange suitable movements for choir and organ, and to perform them in concert. This new choral collection makes available a wide selection and variety of movements especially suited for sacred services. All of the choral movements are based on biblical texts (most of them from the Psalter), on chorale settings or liturgical texts - these offer a wide range of uses during the church yearand within the framework of the liturgy. Score available separately - see item CA.410500.

George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score available separately - see item CA.5505600.

Singfonie is more than a hodgepodge of scat syllables, motives, patterns and riffs in a largedesigned form. rather it attempts to unite traditional forms with modern styles. The achievements of past circle song and improvisational techniques are blended with the pure feeling for rhythms and joy in the pursuit of motivic development in the four movements, which are primarily for double choir. Thus, some rhythmic and motivic germ cells are to be rediscovered in various movements, including the pulsing and unfolding tone repetitions of the first and last movements. a new journey of discovery through the world of pop-choral singing. The cantata Ich freue mich in dir was first performed during Bach's second year as Thomaskantor, on the 3rd day of Christmas, and belongs to the so-called annual cycle of chorale cantatas. Here the focus of the composition is the hymn of the same name by Philipp Ziegler, in which the first and final strophes were adopted, word for word, in the first and sixth movements of the cantata. The soprano, which carries the chorale, is supported by the conrnett (Zink), which already at this time had become a seldom-used instrument. The joyful, lively choral movement with instrumental interludes directly follows the first aria, and begins with a marked, ascending motive at the word Getrost! (safely). The oboes d'amore which accompany the alto lend the movement a special color. In the second aria (for soprano), Bach again shows himself to be the master of text interpretation. The words Wie lieblich klingt es in den Ohren are emphasized in an exchange between open strings and sixteenth note figures. Score available separately - see item CA.3113300.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score available separately - see item CA.3101800.

Telemann's setting of Psalm 121 I lift up mine eyes to the hills reveals him to be an admirer of French music. Constructed on the example of a grand motet, each of the movements is patterned after the French model: the model of an overture for the first movement, the echoes of a chaconne in the second, the dotted gigue rhythms of the Canarie in the third. In addition there is the lively exchange between choir and solo ensemble, and much more. The music is full of poetic imagery, whenever the occasion arises, as at the very beginning with the words Ich hebe meine Augen auf, or in a later passage with the text Siehe, der Hüter Israel schläft noch schlummert nicht (Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep).
