An Advanced Guide to Quicker LearningKnow The Score is a guide to quicker learning for advanced clarinettists. It was originally published in 2012 and designed with the DipABRSM Quick Study in mind – a previously unseen extended piece of music for which 5 minutes preparation time was given prior to an assessed performance. The music was at roughly grade 6 level, based on an assumption that a diploma standard player should be capable of tackling the test in this relatively short amount of time. Following the recent withdrawal of the qualification, the continued aim of this newly edited series is to boost the more advanced player’s confidence at quick learning. Two assumptions are made here — that you are a diploma level clarinettist, and that a reasonable level of sight-reading skill is in place. That said, if you’re less proficient at sight-reading, you should find much in the book that will help you to improve and feel more confident. Alternatively, the book will be of interest to teachers seeking varied, approachable repertoire and theory content to support a keen grade 6 pupil’s longer-term learning. Work for Clarinet solo. The composer writes 'The title refers to several levels in the piece. Partly a method I have used, where three lines are weaved, so they become one line, here the clarinet which can (nearly) only play one tone at the time. Either the three parts disappear and become one waving melodic line as in the beginning of the piece. Or they are put in different registers of the clarinet, so they are heard as separate lines weaving into one another. On a different level there is three different sequences, which are also weaved into one another; one which rises (for instance in the beginning), and one which falls, and one which falls in parallels in several registers. These three sequences become faster and faster every time they reappear. The idea of weaving melodic lines was inspired by Bach's pieces for solo strings, where he in a marvellous way established several simultaneous melodic lines, without simultaneous sounding notes. This happened by weaving parts, which in other works would sound simultaneously, into one another, so that only one note was heard at the time. This meant that in that long line, which was heard as the instrument's development of the piece, other melodies were weaving around each other with different focuses. Louis Spohr's technically, extremely demanding concertos have long been part of clarinetists' standard repertoire. Like the first clarinet concerto, this second concerto was composed for the clarinetist Johann Hermstedt, probably in the spring of 1810. Critics praised the concerto at its premiere, stating that it was undeniably one of the most accomplished works of art of its kind. Emphasized was also the great and brilliant treatment of the solo instrument, combined with a very original orchestra accompaniment, where every part, even the timpani, is obbligato. The concerto was even then a great success with the audience. For publication, Spohr supplemented the solo part with various ossia passages as simplifying alternatives. These can of course be found in the score as well as in the piano reduction presented in Ullrich Scheideler's new critical Urtext edition in collaboration with G. Henle Verlag, now for the first time in a reliable edition.

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children's Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. Louis Spohr's First Clarinet Concerto was written in winter 1808/09, at a time when the clarinet had just established itself as an orchestral and solo instrument. The concertos of Spohr and Weber which we know today and which date from these pioneer days around 1810 are due to the in-depth collaboration between composer and performer. Spohr wrote his technically very demanding clarinet concertos for the virtuoso Johann Simon Hermstedt. After the first successful performances, the composer decided to simplify the solo part for the printed edition.The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on the autograph of the score and the first printing of the parts, which frequently differ from it. Composer, pianist and conductor Kirmo Lintinen is equally at home in jazz as in the world of classical music. Since the turn of the millennium, his main job has specifically been composing concert music. Stylistically, he has found his biggest inspiration in the Baroque and in early 20th-century Neoclassicism. He composed Rieha (Frolic) as a commission from the Crusell Music Festival in Uusikaupunki, Finland, as the obligatory piece for its international clarinet competition, and it was premiered by the semi-finalists in July 2009. The first part of Rieha is dominated by spurting arpeggios, trills and changing tempos. Following this impulsive opening is a brief respite, after which the piano and clarinet begin competing, tossing each other quick, accented semiquaver figures. The rhythm soon becomes syncopated and the piece enters the longest section, a sort of hypertuned, lurching ragtime. The closing section recalls all the work's motifs before burning itself out and vanishing like smoke. Rieha is a consummate virtuoso piece demanding nimble fingers, sharp articulation and a command of tone in all the clarinet's registers. The piano is more than just an accompanying instrument; it is an equal partner. The biggest challenge for the players is synchronising their parts: the changing tempos and metres, and the alternation of quick figures keep the performers on their toes and the audience alert.

1st perf: Douglas Mitchell, Clare Hall, Cambridge, 26 October 2002 Morgan Hayes's Totem, for B flat clarinet, is a short, single melodic line that in its brief duration challenges players of Grades 7 or 8 standard or above to encompass widely contrasted dramatic and lyrical moods within the primitive vision of its title. The composer had no specific ethnological source in mind when composing this piece. Rather, his aim was to suggest the complex rhythms and rituals of tribal life, remote in time from the sophistications of the modern world, but in spirit closer perhaps to our own than we might care to imagine.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him.

Pindar is Dead is a short scherzo for clarinet and piano written in 1968 for Alan Hacker who gave it its first performance in London that year. Pindar is Dead is from Louis MacNeice and the poem expresses disillusionment at the banal activities of an Easter bank holiday. Dalby's music is simple and lighthearted and includes some of the effects with which Alan Hacker was experimenting at that time. The composer's use of the title refers goodnaturedly to his own disillusionment at the August bank holiday which he spent writing it.
