A must-have for Clarinet. This Sonata in 4 movements comes from a group of 3 Sonatas for wind instruments (oboe, clarinet and bassoon) composed in May and june 1921. They are the last in the catalogue of Saint-Saens' works. There is a mysterious anguish which floats throughout this brillant fourth movement. The agitation and feverishness of your playing should reflect this latent anguish. At the conclusion, which refers to the first movement, avoid accenting the quaver in the Barcarolle rhythm which risks making the phrasing too heavy. This series proposes the very best of classical pieces for clarinet, revised by great teachers and concertists, at reduced price.

Composer, pianist and conductor Kirmo Lintinen is equally at home in jazz as in the world of classical music. Since the turn of the millennium, his main job has specifically been composing concert music. Stylistically, he has found his biggest inspiration in the Baroque and in early 20th-century Neoclassicism. He composed Rieha (Frolic) as a commission from the Crusell Music Festival in Uusikaupunki, Finland, as the obligatory piece for its international clarinet competition, and it was premiered by the semi-finalists in July 2009. The first part of Rieha is dominated by spurting arpeggios, trills and changing tempos. Following this impulsive opening is a brief respite, after which the piano and clarinet begin competing, tossing each other quick, accented semiquaver figures. The rhythm soon becomes syncopated and the piece enters the longest section, a sort of hypertuned, lurching ragtime. The closing section recalls all the work's motifs before burning itself out and vanishing like smoke. Rieha is a consummate virtuoso piece demanding nimble fingers, sharp articulation and a command of tone in all the clarinet's registers. The piano is more than just an accompanying instrument; it is an equal partner. The biggest challenge for the players is synchronising their parts: the changing tempos and metres, and the alternation of quick figures keep the performers on their toes and the audience alert.

Kimmo Hakola's Clarinet Concerto (2001) is finally available as a piano reduction and a solo part! The concerto created world-wide buzz after the premiere, which was augmented after the CD release. The Clarinet Concerto is a rich and original work lasting some 40 minutes. It has four movements: the opening movement is dominated by the aggressive toccata-like pounding typical of Hakola. The slow movement, Hidden Songs, is a soaring, melodic and captivating piece of music. The third movement, Allegro farara, is a wild and whirling Oriental dance in a quirky 7/8 rhythm. The finale, which follows without a break, begins with crowd noises that slowly fade. The movement title, Khasene, is the Yiddish for 'wedding'. The nuptials turn out to be quite raucous as Hakola rolls out poignant pathos and rollicking klezmer look-alikes in turn. The soloist is given scope for improvisation.

Following the huge success of their instrumental method Look, Listen & Learn, Michiel Oldenkamp and Jaap Kastelein have focussed their attention on school bands and devised a completely new method that can be used in both instrumental lessons and class bands or wind ensembles.
Learning Music Together is the new method for young wind players and percussionists, aged eight and above.
Learning Music Together has been developed in close collaboration with professionals from the class band world, music schools, and academies in the Netherlands and Germany.
Learning Music Together combines instrumental lessons with a course for class band. The clarinet lessons offer clarinet -specific items such as new notes and technical exercises while at the same time supporting the learning of the class band, with a focus on rhythm, melodic structure and playing music together. The method consists of two volumes. Volume One introduces the first instrumental notes in unison and then develops part-playing with duets. Volume Two builds on the skills taught in the first volume and introduces pieces in three parts. In addition, supplementary material is available on the extensive website, e.g. demo- and accompaniment tracks for all pieces, additional pieces of music (well-known songs) and video tutorials. Learning Music Together is logically structured and illustrated in a child-friendly way - a perfect combination for young musicians!

“Melodic charm, bel canto sensibility, impressionist harmony à la Française and jazz rhythm influences unite in this quartet for three B-flat Clarinets and Bass Clarinet. Yellow Green was premiered on July 23rd, 2013 at the Teatro Municipal de Niterói (Rio de Janeiro) by the musicians of the Omega Quartet: Maurício Silva, Deusiel da Cunha de Souza, Diego Abreu and Mateus Falkemback (bass clarinet). Approximately 9 minutes in length, the title ' Yellow Green ' is a tribute to the two colours of the Brazilian flag. The introduction gives way to a vast Fugue (marked Vivace) dipped in the colours of swing. The central Adagio floats a dreamy, timeless melody. The brief finale brings together the fugue's thematic material with one last recommendation for the performers: 'Feel jazz'. This invigorating work was recorded for the Chant de Linos label by its dedicatees, the Omega Quartet clarinetists.&rdquo.
