Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer?s third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

Arnold's Sonatina was written in January 1951 and was first performed at the Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists in London by Colin Davis. The piece is in three highly varied movements with a brisk opening softer and slower second movement and a Furioso third. A challenging virtuoso piece!

Its expression is shaped by violent changes of tempo and dynamics, clashes between brilliant passagework and distinct articulation, on the one hand, and lyrical phrases, on the other, and a constant contrast between intense sonorities and light textures. The work?s concise form consigns it to the catalogue of so-called miniature pieces. Subito for violin and piano was composed in 1992 for the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. This arrangement for clarinet expands the instrument?s solo repertoire with a work of the highest compositional calibre, representing a mature stage in Witold Lutoslawski?s oeuvre. Among clarinettists, the composer is known principally for the Dance Preludes, which appear both on concert bills and also on the programmes of competitions and auditions. From the composer: 'The word 'subconscious' came from the book 'The Aesthetic Unconsciousness' by Jacques Rancière. The 'light' of this piece comes from an accidental feeling that I try to grasp but is elusive... It seems that neither 'subconscious' nor 'light' can directly feel its concrete existence in music, and the connection between them seems indistinctive or ambiguous. To express the feeling of the relationship between these two concepts in my mind, I used my work to compose a world, deconstructed, extracted and reconstructed the integer multiple harmonics of note D in the writing process, therefore, condensing them into the pitch material of this piece and cast them on the dynamic textures. These textures take a large portion of the whole music, constantly evolving under control, which can be viewed as the intention of grasping something.
