Throne (1988) for Clarinet and Piano was composed on a commission from the Swedish clarinetist Hakon Rosenberg. Structurally it is organized in an arch form. Although it begins in the piano, the work can be considered as one long clarinet solo, where the piano's role is that of extending and mirroring the clarinet, both in register and motif. As such the piano is treated as a monody throughout, until the last warm B Major chord embraces the final notes of the clarinet. On the title page the composer tells us that Throne is Elevation, Unity, Diamonds, Crown, Glory, Velvet, Frailty, Decline, Oblivion, Nothing. In short Throne is and abstract tone-poem on the transitoriness of Life. Poul Ruders 1988.

“Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, Bucolic for Clarinet and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Clarinet is expressive and virtuosic, displaying the entire range of the instrument, accompanied by rhythmic and spread chords in the Piano. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, â€â€œhis works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.â€â€œ Bucolic for Clarinet and Piano is suitable to the advanced clarinetist's repertoire.â€.

The Swiss-born clarinet virtuoso Matthias Muller is one of the most versatile and inspiring clarinet players and composers of his generation. This concerto is modelled on classical forms and deploys an aesthetic that is close to the Second Age of Modernism, which does not seek renewal in external appearance but looks for own characteristic ways in the internal structure. The harmony is based on a specific chord structure, exposed in the first part and set to shape in the next parts. The technical Clarity seeks contrasts in motivic and thematic processing of the material and in pronounced variations. This concerto has been recorded by the composer on the NEOS label (20904).

Wedding Bells was inspired by the wedding of our eldest daughter, Tess. The Wagner and Mendelssohn wedding marches are of course ever popular and the slow movement of the Mozart clarinet concerto contrasts beautifully. My own piece Wedding Bells conveys a celebratory, loving and joyous atmosphere and on the big day I played it during the signing of the register, accompanied by the father of the bride — it was an emotional performance! These arrangements are intended to catch the mood: purists please forgive me — Wagner, Mozart and Mendelssohn may not have written every note here, but I hope that they would have approved.ContentsRichard Wagner: Bridal Chorus from LohengrinWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Clarinet Concerto — 2nd MovementPat Goddard: Wedding BellsFelix Mendelssohn: Wedding March from the incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s DreamGrades 5–7Former Spartan Press Cat. Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest. Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to jazz and other melodies of SouthAmerica. Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate clarinet partly joined by piano chords. Theinitial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at443.

Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was an English composer and teacher, who is perhaps best known for his choral music in the Anglican tradition.
A Near Minuet, however, was written for Clarinet and Piano, and is one of Howells' most charming small-scale works. It was composed in 1946, while Howells was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School, for one of his pupils there.

A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Bozza composed the Aria during the period of his Grand Prix de Rome in 1934. A free adaptation of the third movement of J. S. Bach's Pastoral in F Major for organ (BWV 590), this lyrical piece demonstrates the composer's taste and predilection for wind instruments.
