'While composing Joy in a Minor Key I attempted to achieve a fleeting, light, poetic, almost never “touching the ground†quality. The piece is written in my favourite form of rondo waltz with a coda,' says Elena Kats-Chernin. The composition was commissioned by an Australian patroness for the 50th birthday of her husband, who had recently recovered from serious illness. On first hearing the atmospherically ambivalent sounds, she then felt more reminded of her mother, a great lover of music, to whose memory Joy in a MinorKey was finally dedicated.

Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefevre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded hereas level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefevre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition ofthe clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. Hints and tips from publisher Rudolf Mauz (Die frohliche Klarinette) offer students assistance in the preparation of the work. This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition series, which offers a diverse repertoire of lessons, concerts and exams of varying degrees of difficulty (from easy to difficult). To this end Schott continues to publish popular standard works from music history in a modern and clear edition. For many pieces an audio file of the piano accompaniment is available for download.

Jalousie is a tango written by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925, originally scored for full orchestra. It soon became popular around the world and is today a classic in the modern repertoire, including many arrangements for various instruments and ensembles. This publication is the first for clarinet and piano, arranged by Paula Corley, former Pedagogy Chair for the International Clarinet Association, with piano accompaniment edited by Stephanie Bruning. The work consists of two themes the first a temperamental theme in D minor, followed by a lyrical section in D major, both with a typical tango rhythm. It became Gade's most popular and successful work, enjoying numerous radio broadcasts and recordings. The work was premiered as accompaniment for the Danish screening of the silent film, Don Q, Son of Zorro on September 14, 1925 under the baton of the composer.

Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865-1936) trained under Rimsky- Korsakov and became the most illustrious Russian composer and conductor immediately succeeding Tchaikovsky. Glazunov’s close affinity with the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, of which institution he would later become Director for more than two decades, placed him ideally to assist in the Institute’s transition to the Petrograd Conservatory in the immediate wake of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. For the last six years of his life, Glazunov left the USSR, feeling hemmed in by propagandist restrictions and at the same time out of kilter with the Modernist movement. He lived in exile for a time, touring the USA, before eventually settling in Paris, though his stoical brand of Russian Romanticism never waned. Despite being partly remembered for having taught Shostakovich, Glazunov was never known as a revolutionary composer, more inclined to align himself with 19th century ideologies than with the thrusting new compositional paths forged by Prokofiev and others. Indeed, the nationalistic movement so successfully espoused by Balakirev found a new energy in Glazunov’s hands, and he discovered an opulence of scale which leaned more in the direction of Borodin. There can be no doubting Glazunov’s technical mastery, which successfully drew together contrapuntal, lyrical and virtuosic skills, and which were admired by the likes of Liszt. Glazunov steered a steady course at a time when it was most sorely needed; one need only hear the marvellous Violin Concerto in A minor to experience the full power and authority of his writing, though he possessed an enviable touch with more intimate forms too, such as those readily to be heard in these three charming Miniatures Op.42, originally composed for piano.Clarinet and PianoTranscribed by Mark TannerGrades 6 & 7 (Trinity Grades 6 & 7 syllabuses)Former Spartan Press Cat. Claude Debussy's Sonate for violin and piano was one of his few completed sonatas for solo instrument, though he apparently made plans for several more before his death. This arrangement, by Steve Hanusofski, has been performed at both ClarinetFest and the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, and is an excellent adaptation of a wonderful work to the clarinet.

The two sonatas of Johannes Brahms's op. 120 are widely hailed as crowning points of the repertoire for clarinet and piano. Moreover, in the version for viola and piano arranged by Brahms himself, they rank among the most frequently played viola works of the 19th century. They far surpass in compositional substance the relatively few original sonatas written for these instrumentations during the same period.Of the two fellow works, the Sonata No. 2 in E flat major is the more accessible. Diverging from the classical-romantic tradition, Brahms used the key of E flat major here not to express the heroic or monumental, but to obtain lyrical, chiefly restrained characterizations. The serenade-like beauty of the principal theme, which opens the sonata, has always been particularly admired. In his review of the world premiere, the renowned Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick, a friend of Brahms's, raves with the words it was as if it had fallen from the Heavens. The closing set of variations also follows with gentle gracefulness this lyrical character. However, the middle movement, with its tempestuous outer sections in E flat minor and the hymnic trio in B major provides a passionate and serious contrast, which allows the flanking idyll to unfold its beauties all the more insistently.
