Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefevre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded hereas level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefevre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition ofthe clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. Hints and tips from publisher Rudolf Mauz (Die frohliche Klarinette) offer students assistance in the preparation of the work. This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition series, which offers a diverse repertoire of lessons, concerts and exams of varying degrees of difficulty (from easy to difficult). To this end Schott continues to publish popular standard works from music history in a modern and clear edition. For many pieces an audio file of the piano accompaniment is available for download.

Summer Solstice is a 19-minute concerto in three movements, composed for solo clarinet with a colorfully-textured string orchestra. The piano reduction is comfortably voiced for recital use. Dorff's joy in writing for his own instrument is readily heard in the warm cantabile writing and gracefully idiomatic passagework. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of Mozart's concerto and the rhythmic grit of Copland's, Dorff's concerto is a true hybrid of jazz-inspired language with classical form and counterpoint. The Philadelphia Inquirer has written, Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. It has an invariably American sound. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. Full score is also available for sale as study score (416-41604) or large score (416-41604L)._____________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Summer Solstice (Concerto for Clarinet and Strings)The Philadelphia Inquirer has written “Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. Hopes and worries in the face of a social situation in Germany that the composer found disturbing find expression in this character piece in the Schumann tradition. Past and present enter into dialogue. The text quotation from Heine in the subtitle corresponds to the musical Schubert quotation at the end. The variative figures are reminiscent of a passacaglia. A diabolical dance in the middle section is framed by two parts based on the same material and illustrating nocturnal calm. The work is available as a recording with Felix Brucklacher, clarinet, and Hiroko Arimoto, piano, on the portrait CD released in 2022 on the Genuin Classics label (GEN 22760) on the occasion of the composer's 75th birthday.

The Shoa never was a theme in the works of Ursula Mamlok - with the exception of Ruckblick for saxophone and piano which she wrote in 2002 on commission of the Temple University in memory of Kristallnacht. The contrast between slow and fast movements is much moreelaborate than in her other works from that period, with the fast movements appearing somewhat driven while the piano part for a fewmoments adopts an otherwise unknown severity. Near the end of the third movement, cantabile and fleeting gestures are suddenly pushed toward each other. The first fast movement arises from the destruction of attempted cantability. The Elegy (2nd movement) dies away with a four-fold reminder of its initial motif, the last attempt remaining fragmentary. The fourth movement Lament concludes with a figure that returns to its beginning. In addition to the original version with alto saxophone, versions with bass clarinet or for clarinet in Bb are available.

Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) Clarinet concerto (2005) has five movements played without pause. The beginning Tempestoso is dramatic and powerful, but there is also a beautiful, slow middle section. The second movement consists of a virtuosic solo cadenza, which is dominated by mysterious tremolos on the clarinet. The cadenza leads to Vivace, con brio, which is the central climax of the concerto and the most virtuosic movement both for the orchestra and the soloist. Then follows the slow, melancholic and lyrical fourth movement Adagio molto. The Epilogue is slow, too; the atmosphere of the last movement is unreal, mysterious. The solo part at the end consists largely of broken, multiphonic clarinet sounds before the concerto fades out into a silence. The orchestral study score (ISMN 9790550096332) is available for sale and the orchestral material for hire.
