Throne (1988) for Clarinet and Piano was composed on a commission from the Swedish clarinetist Hakon Rosenberg. Structurally it is organized in an arch form. Although it begins in the piano, the work can be considered as one long clarinet solo, where the piano's role is that of extending and mirroring the clarinet, both in register and motif. As such the piano is treated as a monody throughout, until the last warm B Major chord embraces the final notes of the clarinet. On the title page the composer tells us that Throne is Elevation, Unity, Diamonds, Crown, Glory, Velvet, Frailty, Decline, Oblivion, Nothing. In short Throne is and abstract tone-poem on the transitoriness of Life. Poul Ruders 1988.

French composer, conductor and teacher, Jules Semler-Collery (1902-1988) was born to a musical father. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Semler-Collery's works have been successful, with many of his concertos being included in the Conservatoire's list of compulsory works. Reverie and Scherzo for Clarinet and Piano is no exception to the composer's success. Published in 1950, Semler-Collery's Reverie is marked Andantino Cantabile and is in 6/8 meter. Both the Clarinet solo line and Piano accompaniment are virtousic, exploiting rhythm, tonality and harmony. A cadenza-like passage is heard towards the end. The Scherzo is marked Molta Leggiero and is staccato in 3/4 meter. Quaver and semiquaver passages are heard with the speed accelerating to a dramatic finale. For all advanced clarinetists, Semler-Collery's Reverie and Scherzo provides an exciting performance work for performers and audiences alike..

The music of Anders Hillborg's virtuosic Tampere Raw for clarinet and piano alternates between two vividly different characters: one slowly flowing texture, composed completely intuitively, and one fast, fiercely rhythmical and pulsative texture, where the tone material for the most part is generated from permutations of prime-number series. A thrilling addition to the repertoire, this seven-minute work was commissioned by the Swedish Royal Academy of Music in 1991 for Swedish musicians Martin Fröst and Roland Pöntinen, who later recorded it on BIS records.

ââ¬ÅAndré Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo de Concours for Clarinet in 1899, as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections, the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part, where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra, with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas, operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d?Honneur.ââ¬Â.

Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest. Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to jazz and other melodies of SouthAmerica. Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate clarinet partly joined by piano chords. Theinitial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at443.

“Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!&rdquo.

CONTENTS 1. Baby 2. Brother 3. Grandmother 4. Grandfather 5. Mum 6. Dad The composer has written extensively for film and television, and his gift for musical characterisation illuminates every bar of My Family and Other Animals. Here is a delightful human menagerie, a family circle with its typical variety of awkward and amiable relatives, beautifully portrayed in music of beguiling simplicity by Edmund Jolliffe. Technically, for beginners and early-grade players, there is an important lesson that musical expression is in essence the expression of personality, often from the most basic musical resources. Brother is a cool repeated phrase - a bit detached. Mum is a gentle lullaby, and Grandmother a soothing, dependable tune. Grandfather turns sweet too, but not before a spiky introduction. From his breezy melody Dad seems on his way elsewhere. Perhaps off to wash the car!
