This unusual concert work, commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg, is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept, which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy, the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. At the precocious age of fourteen, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) scribbled out his Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in E major. He wrote a second, this time longer, double piano concerto the following year. In December 1823, the young composer gave the first performance of the E major concerto with his sister Fanny Mendelssohn. Since he came to regard it as mere juvenilia, it never achieved publication in his lifetime. Filled with stylish finger-work, the concerto clearly served to display the musical gifts of the two siblings. It remained forgotten until a version, which had been revised by the composer himself and edited by Karl-Heinz Köhler, surfaced in 1961 in a Leipzig critical edition. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Music, Stucky's Second Concerto is presented in a handsome edition. Commissioned by and written for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and musical director Esa-Pekka Sal onen, the Second Concerto was crafted around musical signatures, representing the parties involved. The result is a three-movement masterpiece of 26 minutes in length.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor by Camille Saint-Saëns, was composed in 1868 and is probably Saint-Saëns' most popular piano concerto. The piece follows the traditional form of three movements but allows for more freedom in tempo markings. Normally, the first movement is fast-paced, while the second is slower. However, the two are reversed in this piece. This arrangement contains only the first movement Andante sostenuto.

Concerto for Trombone was written especially for Jörgen van Rijen, the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story, consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for Jörgen van Rijen technical skills, but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld, Jörgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. Concerto for Trombone was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.The Repräsentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel, conducted by Christopher Walter, accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Special thanks goes to mr. Bert Aalders, director of the MUI. Het Concerto for Trombone is speciaal geschreven voor Jörgen van Rijen, solo trombonist van het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest. Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) Concerto for Cello in C, Hob. VIIb: 1 is a rare instance where a masterpiece was lost, in this case for almost 200 years, before being rediscovered. The manuscript was discovered by Oldrich Pulkert at the Czech National Library in Prague among the Radenín Castle collection. Composed between 1761 and 1765 for his longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist in the Esterházy Orchestra. As the refinements of the Classical concerto were yet to be established by Mozart, this concerto reflects the Baroque ritornello form. This edition is completed by Oldrich Pulkert and Karel olc, with the solo cello part being edited by Milo Sádlo, who also gave the 20th century premiere of the work. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote his CELLO CONCERTO in A minor, Op. 129, in 1850, within the span of only two weeks. He tried offering the work to two publishers before Breitkopf and Hartel decided to publish it. He stressed the point that it would probably sell because cello concerti were few and far between. Never performed in the composer's lifetime, it received its premiere in Oldenburg on April 23, 1860, with Ludwig Ebert playing the solo part. The unique charm of the concerto lies in its structure and scoring, without movement breaks, and written so that the cello part almost never strays from its middle and upper registers. Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses. Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello. In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and classical wind ensemble by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University. Cellist and composer David Popper published the CELLO CONCERTO No. 5 in C major, Hob. VIIb:5, in 1899 as a completion of stetches supposedly made by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Due to more recent scholarship, the work is now believed to have been written by Popper himself. A blend of technical exploration and melodic charm, the concerto has become a familiar staple of the cello repertoire. It consists of three movements: 1. Allegro moderato, 2. Andante, and 3.
