Perfect for opening or closing a concert for first-year band students, A Woodland Celebration by Robert Sheldon lends a light rhythmic style to a tuneful melody. As soon as young students can play a concert B-flat scale and learn the note concert A-flat, this piece is easily playable. Second clarinet does not go over the break, and second trumpet and horn have limited ranges as well.

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

A Nottingham Festival débute par un motif ascendant qui contraste avec la fougueuse entrée des cuivres. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. Une coda énergique met fin cette somptueuse composition qui souligne la force créatrice du compositeur.

Program Notes: Stylistically diverse -- tranquil, spirited pastoral, sensitive, energetic -- exhibiting a remarkable palette, the five movements of SINFONIA IX form a unique symphonic statement. Movement I, Prelude, is about contrasts: A lazy, smooth, motive in brasses alternates with, and then joins, an active and detached motive in woodwinds. The spirited Movement II, Morley's Ghost, is an intricate canonic collage and homage to that venerable theoretician & composer, Thomas Morley. By contrast, movement III, Dialog, speaks in a relaxed, lyrical, and pastoral language as it develops its gently rising and falling motives. Movement IV, Waltz, innocently celebrates the joys of childhood with a lilting melody and rondo form. For the rousing Finale, Movement V begins with a martial call of repeated-notes, heralding a headstrong journey of power and excitement. Like a number of the composer's other works, SINFONIA IX is based on earlier material: A brass sextet, written in 1966 when the composer was nineteen years old, forms the raw material for the first, third and fifth movements, while a later work, Martin's Waltz (a children's piece for flutes and clarinets composed in 1975) is the basis of the fourth movement. The second movement, however, is a fanciful contrapuntal commentary on Thomas Morley's 16th-century canzonet, Fire and Lightning. SINFONIA IX is dedicated to John Raforth, a distinguished band director and music educator at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. The work was commissioned by his friends and former students, and was completed in 1977. Its first publication some twenty years later is a result of the increasing attention paid by university band directors to the earlier Sinfonias, particularly Sinfonia III (Hymns and Dances); Sinfonia V (Sinfonia Sacra et Profana); and now, Sinfonia IX. Whereas the first two works are wind ensemble compositions that have been championed equally by the concert band, Sinfonia IX is the composer's first college-level Sinfonia written especially for concert band. The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one,and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion,” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together.” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals.” His vision is rejected,and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury,” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep,” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In thesecond movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world.” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast,which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. A Little Irish Suite is an original work composed specifically for the Compact Band Series. This series offers smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform original, high-quality works. A Little Irish Suite consists of three movements, all based on Irish folk tunes. Clear structure and crisp harmonies complemented by plain, comprehensible melodies, are characteristic of this piece. It offers conductors the opportunity to work on tone, balance, phrasing as well as on technique with their ensemble. As with all works in the Compact Band Series, A Little Irish Suite features optional parts for instruments that are played less frequently. Conductors can pickand choose the parts needed to best fit the music and the musicians available, to determine the best possible instrumentation for their own ensemble. The duration of six minutes and the large variety and contrast of material played in A Little Irish Suite also make it an ideal selection for competitions or festivals.
