O Salutaris Hostia is one of Eriks Ešenvalds' most popular pieces. Originally written for female voices, the composer later created a version for full choir on which this arrangement is based. It has a gentle meditation with the two soloists drifting across the soft band accompaniment, alternately echoing and imitating each other or joining together in thirds. The effect is quietly ecstatic, a brief moment of adoration and wonderment. This arrangement can be played with either two cornets or two euphoniums as soloists as the accompaniment works just as effectively with either.

Nordanvind is a tour de force symphonic rhapsody that is built on three Scandinavian folk songs. Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . Although this is a treasured song to people of Swedish descent everywhere, it speaks to all people about a father tending and nourishing his children, and protecting them from evil .SPS71FThe Augustana College Concert BandFounded in 1874, the Augustana Band program is one of the oldest continuously active collegiate band programs in the country . The Concert Band is one of two bands on campus and was formed more than thirty years ago . The Concert Band attracts students of every skill level and from a wide variety of majors . Students in the ensemble play a large part in choosing their music for performance, which include works from the standard repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and the latest compositions from leading composers .Rick Jaeschke began his musical career as a clarinet player in the 1st US Army Band . He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University, a Masters of Music from James Madison University, and a doctorate from Columbia University in New York . He was also fortunate to study conducting with Donald Hunsburger and with Frederick Fennell .Dr . Jaeschke taught band and choir at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland, and for fifteen years, he was the district Music Supervisor in Armonk, New York, where he taught high school concert and jazz bands, beginning band, and music technology . During that time, the music program flourished, and the high school band consistently received Gold Medals in the New York State Festivals, as well as in national, and international festivals . As a clarinet and saxophone player, Dr . Jaeschke performed in the New York metropolitan area with the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, the Putnam Symphony Orchestra, Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra, and served as the concert master for the Hudson Valley Wind Symphony .For several years, Dr . Jaeschke served as the Fine Arts Coordinator for the District 204 schools in Naperville, IL, a district selected as One of the Best 100 Schools in America for Music . Currently, Dr . Jaeschke is an Associate Professor at Augustana College where he teaches music and music education courses, and directs the Concert Band . He has served on various educational boards, is a National edTPA scorer, and has presented at state, national and international music conferences . Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The work’s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.Dit werk is geschreven voor de officiële inwijding van het beeldhouwwerk Le Lion de Belfort: een enorme uit rodezandsteen gebeeldhouwde leeuw die het gezicht van de Franse stad Belfort bepaalt. During his lifetime, Heinrich Schaffer (1808-1874) was a famous singerand singing teacher. With his compositions for male-voice choir, hewas very influential in northern Germany. Nowadays, little is left ofthis man?s fame. Only his song Die Post im Walde is regularly performedwith much enjoyment by many men?s choirs. This beautiful song is nowavailable for trumpet and concert band. Heinrich Schäffer (1808-1874) was een befaamd zanger en zangpedagoog. Met zijn composities voor mannenkoor was hij in Noord-Duitsland zeer invloedrijk, maar van zijn beroemdheid is nog maar weinig over. Alleen zijn lied Die Postim Walde is onsterfelijk, met name in de mannenkoorwereld. De charme van het lied ligt in het verhalende karakter ervan. Het beeld van een postiljon, bij nacht rijdend door een bos, nu en dan signalen spelend, denkend aan zijngeliefde… het wordt moeiteloos verklankt in Die Post im Walde.Mit seinen Kompositionen, vornehmlich für Männerchor geschrieben, hatte der Sänger und Gesangslehrer Heinrich Schäffer großen Einfluss im norddeutschen Raum. Sein Lied Die Post im Walde wurde auch über die Grenzen dieser Region hinaus berühmt und wird heute noch gerne gesungen. Wil van der Beek machte das schöne Lied nun auch dem Blasorchester zugänglich. Chanteur et pédagogue émérite, Heinrich Schäffer (1808-1874) a acquis une reconnaissance et une notoriété de son vivant. The title of this work is based on the name of the commissioning band: Music Society Asaf (Dutch for Asaph). In the Hebrew Bible, the poet, singer and seer Asaph is in charge of the choir in the house of King David. Various psalms, including Psalm 81, which is used in this work, are attributed to him. The melody of this psalm is flanked by a march-like initial part, and the traditional klezmer melody “Uri Tzion†features as a spectacular finale.

The fantasy called Christmas Day was originally written for mixed choir with orchestra or organ accompaniment. Robert van Beringen has arranged this work for concert band exactly 100 years later. Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.Jacob de Haan maakte dit arrangement voor blaasorkest met eventueel een mannenkoor. Het originele kerstlied werd geschreven door de Oostenrijkse componist en organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). Fairfield Fanfare (expanded version) by Roxanna Panufnik is a 4-minute work for youth and mixed choirs, brass band and orchestra. Originally commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fairfield Halls, Croydon in 2012, the opening chords are based on all the alphabetic note names from FA-ir-F(#)-i-E-l-D, heralding a flourishing section of hustle and bustle that is the city of Croydon today. This expanded version includes brass band and choirs, with a setting of the text from Psalm 127.
The expanded version was commissioned by the London Mozart Players, who premiered the piece on 30 June 2016 at Fairfield Halls, Croydon.

After the war, Tolkatchev’s works were published and now tour the world as a travelling exhibition. Adventure Land was commissioned by Clermont Communauté and the CREA (the directors of the local music schools and conservatories) in France. This work was the opening piece of a show combining orchestra, choir and actors. The story takes place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, which an explorer discovers through a series of riddles and adventures. Adventure Land is written in the form of a symphonic march which features a slow and pleasant passage in the middle of the work. The result is a dynamic and playful piece, similar to the style that one might find in cartoons or in animated films.Adventure Land werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Clermont Communauté en de CREA (de leiders van de lokale muziekscholen en het plaatselijke conservatorium) in Frankrijk. Dit stuk was het openingswerk van een show waarin orkest, koor en acteurs zich verenigden. Het verhaal vindt plaats in de stad Clermont-Ferrand, die door een avonturier wordt ontdekt door middel van een reeks raadsels en belevenissen. Adventure Land is geschreven in de vorm van een symfonische mars met een langzame, fraaie passage in het midden. Het resultaat is een dynamisch, speels werk in een stijl die doet denken aan teken- en animatiefilms.Adventure Land wurde vom Gemeindeverband Clermont (F) und der CREA (Direktoren der lokalen Musikschulen und Konservatorien) in Auftrag gegeben. Adventure Land est écrit sous forme de marche symphonique laquelle un passage lent et chaleureux a été ajouté au milieu de l’œuvre. Il en résulte une pièce dynamique et enjouée, dans un style que l’on retrouve dans les dessins animés, les films d’animation ou au cinéma.

This piece, as the title might suggest, brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. Amongst his best hits are Nabucco from 1842, which signified a turn-around after the flop of a previous opera, as well as Rigoletto, which in 1851 propelled him to international fame. Verdi’s Triumphs features: Triumphmarch and Su! Del nilo al sacro lido from Aida, the Prisoners’ Freedom Choir from Nabucco and La donna è mobile from Rigoletto.Zoals de titel al doet vermoeden, brengt dit werk de grootste triomfen van Verdi samen. Zijn bekendste opera’s zijn ongetwijfeld Nabucco uit 1842, maar ook Rigoletto uit 1851. Deze opera’s bezorgden hem eeuwige roem. In Verdi’s Triumphs vinden we de Triumphmarch en Su! Del nilo al sacro lido uit Aida, het Prisoners’ Freedom Choir uit Nabucco en La donna è mobile uit Rigoletto terug. Zu Verdis größten Triumphen zählen sicherlich die Opern Nabucco von 1842, die eine Wende nach einigen Misserfolgen markierte, Rigoletto, die ihm 1851 zum internationalen Durchbruch verhalf und Aida, die er zur Eröffnung des Suezkanals schrieb. Auch aus heutiger Sicht sind gerade diese Werke besonders bekannt und beliebt. Daher wählte Wil van der Beek für sein Arrangement die folgenden Titel: Triumphmarsch und Su! Nabucco (1842), Rigoletto (1851) e Aida (composta in occasione dell’inaugurazione del Canale di Suez), tra le altre, sono entrate nell’olimpo dell’opera. Verdi’s Triumphs di Wil van der Beek raccoglie quattro temi molto popolari: la Marcia trionfale e Su! Bertold Hummel's Symphonic Overture was initially part of the Orgeon Symphony. It was then revised as a work in its own right and given the title Symphonic Overture. This work, which lasts about eight minutes, is conceived from one thematic idea. It explores the technical recources as well as the rich tonal colours of the wind band. It is suitable both for concerts competitions. Bertold Hummel was a pupil of Harald Genzmer.
