Picture yourself in the marvellous paradise of Italy’s Grado Lagoon. The magnificent display of colour and the salty scent of sea air combine with the fragrant tamarisk to create a unique atmosphere. In this glorious haven time stands still - except for the flight of the seagulls and the slow flood tide. From a distance you hear an adagio coming through the air from a procession of boats. Its solemn tones dissipate into the landscape of the lagoon.

As a native Londoner, composer Philip Sparke has always been attracted to the great cities of the world, fascinated by their varied moods and human diversity. London, Chicago, Tokyo, Paris, Rome and New York all have their own characters but also share much in common. This overture is a salute to the energy and grandeur of such cities. A fantastic new concert work for moderately advanced bands. The Last Dream of the Old Oak (Le dernier rêve du chêne) deMaxime Aulio s’inspire du conte éponyme d’Andersen.

The commission for this work in fact came from Taiwan, upon which Yagisawa drew inspiration from the traditional hunting songs of the Taroko, a people native to Eastern Taiwan. This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect!

This fantastic, stirring fanfare was written with the composer?s wish that the young musicians performing it would fly into the bright future like pheasants. The first part of the piece is a fanfare, which is suitable for opening ceremonies, and the second part is a lush chorale-like movement. Your band can perform both parts together or you could perform each one separately. This short opening work will start any concert in real style. The title of this work refers to the Tall Ship Race, in which large sailing ships annually appear at various European destinations. The work consists of a slow introduction, which describes the majestic sailing ships; and a faster section (Vivo), which begins in the style of a sea shanty. Now the ship is under full sail, and we hear a reprise of material from the introduction to bring the piece to a close. Viterbo shares its name with a province located in the Latium region of Italy. Its landscape, a mixture of fl atland, rolling hills and lakes, contains many artefacts of the Roman Empire as well as the preceding Etruscancivilization. This area provided inspiration for Viterbo, written for the 50th anniversary of the orchestra in the town of Monterosi, Viterbo.

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly ‘ancient times’ while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!
