This classic Bach fugue is ideal for bands of all sizes and skills, but especially adapted for those with limited instrumentation desiring to challenge their developing musicians. It is also appropriate for very small ensembles, having been carefully crafted by the arranger to work well with as few as five performers. The required independence of parts provides opportunities for developing technical and musical skills while also presenting the option for performance of a masterwork from the Baroque era. The final product will be well worth the effort in developing and enhancing the overall musicianship of your performers. Great music!

TINY TATTOO was written after the composer visited a “treetop†bistro at Big Sur, California. The restaurant is named Nepenthe, after an ancient Greek elixir fabled to relieve any and all sorrows. This spot-on-the-cliff made such an impression on Pann that musical ideas immediately started flowing, giving rise to the opening hook of this 5-minute orchestral work. Written as a gift to conductor Alastair Willis, TINY TATTOO is a highly catchy and colorful work with exciting percussion parts, equally suitable for advanced student orchestras, professional ensembles, and everything in between.TINY TATTOO (2017) was written after visiting a “treetop†bistro at Big Sur, California with my wife after driving the entire day up from L.A. The restaurant is called “Nepenthe,†named after an ancient Greek elixir fabled to relieve one from any and all sorrows. This spot-on-the-cliff made such an impression on me (in my exhausted state) that I immediately began humming the opening minimal hook in what is now this piece. Any well-known excerpts containted within the work are happy accidents.Tiny Tattoo was written as a gift to conductor Alastair Willis.

English composer Malcolm Arnold wrote this compact sonatina in 1951 and it has since become one of his most popular instrumental works. As always with Arnold, it is impeccably crafted: the first movement, with it's wide leaps, the occasional incursion of a six-eight bar into the prevailing four-four, and the lightest of jazzy touches, lives up to its marking of Allegro con brio; while the second demonstates Arnold's love at this period of a gentle cantabile style where no shadows yet lurk. The finale is a wild dance in three-four time marked Furioso, and it is a distant cousin of the Czech Furiant. With its vigorous rhythms and cascading semiquavers, it has something of the open-air quality of Dvorak at his most buccolic - not a frequent influence on Malcolm Arnold, but a highly appropriate one in this charming (and challenging) little work. This version for clarinet solo with wind band has been arranged by saxophone player Alex Steurs.

Sir Dirk Brossé, music director at the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, is a versatile composer of orchestral and symphonic repertoire, chamber music, film & musical. His compositions are performed worldwide by the most prominent orchestras and soloists. About the new series of 10 Musical Postcards for wind band, Dirk says the following: Composing is a commitment; it is my life’s mission. For me composing means creating a vacuum around myself and allowing myself to be submerged by impressions. It is a continual struggle between fantasy and reality, between dream and reality. Out of chaos of sounds and emotions I try to order my thoughts by juggling shreds of melodies, original chords, striking sound colours and alternating rhythms. Melody, harmony, rhythm and sound colours are finally balanced to generate a harmonious universe. This series of ten ‘Musical Postcards’ are a reflection of my travels, thoughts, discoveries and musical career so far, which has brought me around the globe. I look forward to you joining me on this voyage of discovery….
