The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expression of power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrous consequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions ofmany countries for miles around. The tsunami took the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceanic crust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50 km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressive atmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami is a fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Het woord 'tsunami' is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofalegevolgen.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond er een zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizendenmensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen en steden.

Er zijn meer gebieden waar sprake is van een 'directe' dreiging, zoals op het eiland La Palma, één van de Canarische eilanden. Dit eiland ligt op een breukvlak en is daarmeeeen tijdbom van de natuur. Bij een calamiteit als een megatsunami zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgenvan dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami een allesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een 'gewone' dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in delucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Thema's worden onderbroken door plotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunamiis een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na het natuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de nat.

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (The Future King). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. On his arrival he travelled north (The Journey to Trondheim), where he began to gain the support of the landowners by promising to give up the rights of taxation his father had previously claimed. Elrik's sons allied themselves with the Danes, but were invariably defeated by Haakon, who was successful in everything he undertook except in his attempt to introduce Christianity to the country (The Missionary King), which aroused an opposition he did not feel strong enough to face. One of his most famous victories was The Battle of Rastarkalv (near Frei) in 955. By placing ten standards far apart along a low ridge (to give the impression his army was bigger than it actually was), he managed to fool Eirik's sons that they were outnumbered (the ten standards are represented by ten loud chords that begin in m. 420). The Danes fled and were slaughtered by Haakon's army.

In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West, the domain of cowboys, indians, trappers and other fortune hunters.
Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached, which in effect meant the end of the Wild West.
Its stories, however, survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books, films, and, of course, music. Some characters, such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales.

In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools, among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars, fiddles, and banjos) and to dance.
After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part, the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up, i.e. driven together, spectacular things happen.

In de driedelige 'Cowboy Suite' neemt Alan Laken ons mee naar het 'Wilde Westen', het domein van cowboys, indianen, pelsjagers en andere gelukzoekers.
Rond 1890, werd de westkust van Amerika bereikt, dit betekende het eindevan het Wilde Westen.

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

Singapura (du sanskrit singa, lion et pura, ville) est le nom malais de l’île de Singapour. Le symbole de cette cité-État est un animal tête de lion et au corps de poisson, le Merlion. Il garde l’embouchure du fleuve Singapour. Lion City Festival est une marche rapide, structurée selon la forme ABA. La fanfare d’ouverture chemine vers un air de marche, vif et gai, interprété par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce le trio. Les lignes sont jouées avec le phrasé fl uide du legato, puis laissent la place au retour du thème premier, réexposé dans diverses formes.

Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms.
Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement.
The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa.
The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana.
In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes.

Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'. Carl Wittrock's brede interesse voor de wereldmuziek resulteerde in dit op originele Afrikaanse ritmes gebaseerde concertwerk.
Het slagwerk speelt uiteraard een opvallende rol, maar ook het orkest kan zich op een heerlijke manier uitleven.
De inleiding schildert het ontwaken van de natuur, welke overgaat in een dans. Het motief van deze dans (Apollo) is afkomstig uit Gambia. De begeleiding bestaat uit een ostinaatpatroon van de balafon-meester Maudo Susa.
De basis van het rustige middendeel is gelegen in het ritme van de Gigbo, een traditionele dans uit Ghana.
Het laatste deel (met enige gelijkenis met The Lion King) maakt gebruik van het zogenaamde Kono ritme.
Het werk komt het best tot zijn recht als er gebruik wordt gemaakt van djembes.

Junior Rock depicts two children, a brother and sister, who despite all their differences are both filled with the joys of life. The piece opens with a lively graceful theme depicting the light and good-natured mood that characterizes the two children playing. The music then becomes more calm and romantic in the middle passage. The piece comes to a cheerful and youthful close with the extended restatement of the earlier thematic material.

The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodaná nev??sta, The Sold Fiancée) is the second opera, a comedy in three acts, by Bedøich Smetana. The Czech libretto was written by Karel Sabina, who had also written the libretto for Brandenburgers in Bohemia. Composed in 1863 1866, the work was originally envisioned as an operetta, a light opera with spoken dialogue in place of sung recitatives.

It was first performed in this form in 1866 in Prague. The definitive version of the work, now an opera buffa, was finished in 1870 and was performed the same year. The opera's overture and three dances are part of the orchestral repertoire.

De verkochte bruid (Tsjechisch: Prodaná nevesta, De verkochte verloofde) is de tweede opera, een komedie in drie bedrijven, door Bedøich Smetana. Het Tsjechische libretto werd geschreven door Karel Sabina, die ook het libretto schreefvoor Brandenburgers in Bohemen. Gecomponeerd in 1863-1866, was het werk oorspronkelijk gepland als een operette, opera met een lichte gesproken dialoog in plaats van gezongen recitatieven.

Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!

Deze filmmuziekachtige compositie vertelt de geschiedenis van de Angelsaksische monnik Lebu nus. Rond het jaar 768 stichtte hij in Deventer een kerk met het doel de heidense Saksische bevolking te bekeren. Op elkaar volgende contrastrijkethema’s geven een muzikale verbeelding van het IJsseldal, de Saksen en Lebu nus, de bouw van de kerk en de verwoesting ervan in de strijd tegen de Saksen. Nog één keer weerklinkt het ‘IJsseldalthema’ in mineur totdat in eenstralende finale alle thema’s samenkomen. Indrukwekkend!

Diese filmmusikähnliche Komposition erzählt die Geschichte des angelsächsischen Mönchs Lebu nus, der um das Jahr 768 im Zuge der Missionierung der heidnischen Sachsen eine Kirche im niederländischen Deventer errichtete. Aufeinander folgende, kontrastive Themen beschreiben das Ijssel-Tal, die Sachsen und Lebu nus, den Kirchenbau und die Zerstörung im Kampf gegen die Sachsen. Es erklingt noch einmal das Ijssel-Tal-Thema in Moll, bevor im schillernden Finale alle Themen zusammenkommen.

Plusieurs lignes musicales se confondent dans cette composition, évoquant tour tour la vallée de l’Ijssel, la ville néerlandaise de Daventria (mot latin de Daventer) ainsi que la vie du moine anglosaxon Lebu nus, qui en 768, décida de construire une église pour les saxons restés pa ens. Le dernier tableau réunit les différents thèmes, nous révélant que la cohabitation est parfois laborieuse mais toujours enrichissante. Un finale pétillant haut en couleurs.

Questa composizione, scritta nello stile della musica da film, racconta la storia del monaco Lebu nus che nell’anno 768 quando era incaricato di convertire al cristianesimo i sassoni restati pagani, si occupò anche della costruzione di una chiesa a Daventer (Paesi Bassi). Temi contrastanti che si susseguono descrivono la valle di Iissel, i sassoni e il monaco Lebu nus. Il compositore traduce in musica la costruzione della chiesa e la sua completa distruzione ad opera dei sassoni nel corso di una battaglia. Il motivo della valle di Ijssel è ripreso ancora in una tonalit minore, prima che tutti i temi accompagnino il brano al suo scintillante finale.
