The Juvavum Fanfare was composed for the closing concert of the first part-time University course in Wind Orchestra Conducting at the renowned Mozarteum University Salzburg, which took place from 2019 to 2021 for the first time. This celebratory opening composition is dedicated to the esteemed course instructor and conductor, Martin Fuchsberger, as well as to all the graduates who successfully completed this program. The name of the fanfare, “Juvavum,” derives from the ancient Roman name for Salzburg. This connection to Salzburg is not only evident in the premiere of the piece at the Mozarteum Salzburg but also in its musical depth. Thematically, the initial fanfare and subsequent lyrical section draw from the melody of Salzburg's regional anthem, “Land uns'rer Väter.” The majestic fanfare echoes the opening intervals of this anthem. From bar 27 onward, a direct citation of the melodic theme can be heard. Both the fanfare motifs and the vocal lines of this anthem are eventually brought together in an exhilarating final ection. The Juvavum Fanfare is ideally suited to ceremonially open concerts and provides an engaging experience for both listeners and musicians alike due to its appropriate length.

When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. Written in 1915, the background of America First has not been well documented. It is believed that Losey choose this particular title as a result of World War I taking place during the time the march was composed. As the original purpose of a march was for use by the military to keep time during marching and maneuvers, this wonderful march could certainly have served that purpose, as well as evoking a sense of pride and patriotism when performed by bands during the period.

Still, Still, Still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. In German, its first line translates to Hush, hush, hush, for the little child wants to sleep! The melody is a folk tune from the region around Salzburg, and appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folk song collection of the founder of the Salzburg Museum. PARADE CONCERTO was Lancen's first concerto for symphonic band. He had fallen in love with the marvellous sonorities of a symphonic band and wanted to join the wind players in a concert, so he wrote this concerto and gave it a parade character. PARADE CONCERTO was premiered in 1972 by Pierre NIMAX in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxemburg), G. WAGNER conducting. That same year the composer performed it for the first time, in Spain with the Banda Primitiva from Lliria, Jan MOLENAAR conducting. He has performed it since in many countries, including France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxemburg, Norway and the USA.

Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. Though fascinating to some and terrifying to others, few animals are as universally mesmerizing. Composer Tyler Arcari has crafted a very fun piece making use of auxiliary percussion instruments to emulate a snake's hiss or ominous rattle. With very strong and interesting melodic material, and scored to make a developing band sound great, this piece is sure to be a favorite among students.Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. The majority of people have a base fear of them, while others have a “heebie-jeebies†experience. We all know how the great explorer Dr. Indiana Jones felt about snakes, especially when he famously fell into a snake pit during Raiders of the Lost Ark. However you feel about snakes, a pit of them certainly sounds like an adventure.About the work:Snake Pit uses a lot of auxiliary percussion instruments. Some of these sounds are intended to subtly mimic the sounds that snakes make. The maraca in m. 4, of course, is a rattler’s call! The Chinese cymbal is intended to sound like the “hiss†of a not-so-friendly serpent. The eighth-note pattern at m. 9 is used throughout as a “creepy†effect using dynamic contrast so take care to emphasize this when present.I enjoy the gong as a “color†instrument in the band. I try to balance it with the low brass. Take care that at m. 42 the gong is not “front-and center†but more of a support for the nice accented chords in the low brass. Also, the trumpets can become spaced too much here. The accents are more for emphasis and less space.

Issued in 1966, the enduring popularity of this novelty number for young bands can best be explained by its appealing simplicity and practical flexibility. All that's needed is at least one low instrument to cover the bass part (trombone, baritone, tenor sax, tuba, bass clarinet) and any combination of higher instruments for the treble part. Musically it's a 12-bar blues featuring a staccato walking bass line for low winds punctuated by a rhythmic, repeated-pitch pattern for upper winds. Beginners who can play just two notes can even play along, and the final chorus offers some dramatic options by having the band stand the first time through, then playing it one more time! as an encore after applause. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don’t Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.
