Kiskiminetas is a Native American word that means to make daylight and was likely a command given to break camp and continue the journey. Paul Murtha's escriptive work for young players opens with a noble fanfare suggesting the break of day. A lyric section follows depicting scenic vistas along the path, and finally an exuberant adventure theme celebrates the conclusion of the journey. Nicely paced with plenty of variety.

Händel's opera Scipio was written in 1725 and performed the following year in the King's Theatre, London. After Händel's death his operas fell into obscurity until the 1960s, when they experienced a major revival. This famous march from Scipio has however remained popular since its first performance and has been the Regimental Slow March of the British Grenadier Guards since the 18th century. The march is fairly simple and gives young bands the opportunity to play a well-known baroque melody which should be well within their technical ability.

Also available for euphonium and piano (HL44010860) Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Ms. Marzella was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund (as a result of winning BBC Radio 2's Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004), which allowed her to commission a series of new works for euphonium. Scaramouche continues Sparke's series of works that highlights the Italian theatre tradition of commedia dell'arte. Like its predecessors Pantomime and Harlequin, Scaramouche draws on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterized by the symbolic happy/sad masks of European theatre. A slow, expressive ballad followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the instrument, and the soloist to display its full capabilities.

In these challenging economic times, what better way to show creativity and compliance than this hilarious setting of the traditional Jingle Bells? The opening announcement reminds the audience that our budgets have been cut and the band has been forced to reduce the amount of new instrument purchases. As a result, the band went to the toy shop and bought several new instruments including the kazoo, toy drum, toy xylophone, and trash can lid cymbals among others. Following the tuning of the toys, the swing setting kicks off and features the toys in melody, improvisation and response quotes throughout. Now that’s what I call using our resources!.

This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts.

The name Cambrinus, a corrupted variation on ‘Jan Primus’ (John the First), refers to the flamboyant John I of Brabant, who was the Duke of the Dutch provinces Brabant and Limburg, in the second half of the 13th century. This piece of music tells the story of this notable man, starting with the Battle of Worringen in 1288, where he scored a glorious victory, followed by an exuberant celebration in which he also contemplates about the suffering he and his men have caused. Based on the well-loved hymn tune, Madrid (Come, Christians, Join To Sing), this creatively striking, rousing overture is perfectly suited to be a concert opener or closer. Energetic rhythms, effective orchestration, and warm harmonies make this piece a favorite of band members and concertgoers alike, while remaining practical for conductors to prepare, even with limited rehearsal time. The melody of Bundeslied originates from Mozart’s' Frimaurerkantate (KV62) from 1791. However research has shown evidence that it was probably composed by Johann Holzer, a freemason brother of his, but there is no definite evidence for this. Following the Second World War this melody was used as the basis for the new Austrian national anthem. Micheal Bilkes has adapted this beautiful, stately hymn for concert band. The result is a captivating work for both performers and audience.

This composition reflects a colorful time in American history and is an opportunity for your band to discover ragtime rhythms. Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, Hands up! This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. The artful interplay between sections gives this piece the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced work. Dur: 3:35.

For this work in popular style, Roland Kernen uses two well-known Christmas melodies. In the introduction we hear “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” followed by a lively version of “Silent Night.” Subsequently, the attractive carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is featured more extensively.
