The German Christmas song Von Himmel hoch, O Englein kommt is one of the oldest known German carols, with the earliest versions, also known as Susani, going back to the 14th century. This exceptional arrangement by Jan de Haan works extremely well for brass band and will make an ideal work for any Christmas concert.

You'll be surprised to know that this great sounding work uses only six notes in all instruments, with the exception of the clarinets, which also use a low written B to involve the right hand. The piece has a Renaissance quality to it and includes a middle processional theme (at the same tempo) to work on legato playing. Optional parts are included for clarinet 2 and trumpet 2. There is something for everyone in this dynamic addition to the repertoire!
About FJH Beginning Band
Appropriate within the first year of instruction and beginning of the second year. Clarinets do not go above the break, and there is limited use of accidentals. Plenty of doublings in the lower voices. Grade 1.

Festive Variations on Lasst uns Erfreuen, is based freely on the German chorale melody more commonly known as All Creatures of Our God and King. In five variations, this work begins with an Allegro introduction in 6/8, followed by a serene statement of the theme. The first variation reflects the 6/8 optimism of the introduction. The second has a more majestic texture in 3/4 time, featuring brass and percussion. The third variation is a scherzo, fairly fragmentary and more disjunct than the others. This is the most academic of the variations. The fourth is a gentle ballad freely based on the first four notes of the melody. The fifth variation returns to the complete melody, found in a fugato with variations within. Before the work concludes, the original introduction and theme are restated in their first form, followed by a coda based on the introductory motive.

Henry Purcell’s epitaph in the Westminster Abbey reads “Here lyes Henry Purcell Esqre, who left this Lyfe and is gone to that Blessed Place where only his Harmony can be exceeded.†Purcell’s setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Delightfully characteristic Baroque counterpoint and harmonies form a great style study for your band while being a wonderful performance piece. We are often so focused on presenting the entire ensemble that it’s easy to forget we can also program solo feature pieces. There are so many reasons to do just that. It rewards that special player who has been working so hard. It sets an example for other players in the section. It provides a nice contrast regardless of what else is programmed. Be sure to put on the demonstration CD found in this catalog and hear Flight of Fancy for yourself. We’re sure you’ll like it.Scintillating!
