Taking its title from a poem about grief and loss by Chrissie Pinney, Live On honors the life of band director Linda Mann, to whom the piece is dedicated. The piece begins with a pensive intro before shifting to a whimsical theme that brings about happy thoughts of a life well-lived. After a return to the poignant opening material, the music surges to a triumphant conclusion based on an augmented version of the whimsical theme.Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students, in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Mann’s impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association. In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should “depict Linda’s personality: dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like.†They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher. After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.Live OnNow as I live onWithout youI hope to keepThe pieces of youThat I loved so dearlyYour mannerismsAnd compassionate characterAnd smiles through struggleSo that youMay live on too -Chrissie PinneyI reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann. The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece. After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017.

Expeditious begins with fanfare-like harmonies, making this beginning band piece sound unexpectedly advanced. Composer John Pasternak utilizes accessible notes and rhythms in this well-crafted piece for the youngest players while still creating a rich musical experience. Pasternak is fast becoming a go to composer for intriguing works for young bands.Expeditious focuses on contrast in articulations. The beginning of the piece focuses on a marcato/accented style, and the notes should be given full value. At m. 11, the piece switches focus to a staccato articulation style. Pickups into m. 26 should have a large dynamic contrast. The style at m. 41 should have a more legato feel. Measure 45 returns to a staccato feel. Measure 47 will then switch back to the prior legato style. The dynamic change at m. 52 should be instant. Measure 70 should also have an instant dynamic change. The piece ends with the marcato/accented style from the beginning of the piece.

Francisco Coll's vivid and unpredictable Piano Concertino: No sere yo quien diga nada (I'm not saying nothing) is one of his most striking scores to date. Written for Nicolas Hodges this four-movement work, with its idiosyncratic instrumentation (a bottom-heavy ensemble of lower strings, wind, brass, and percussion), flinty harmonies, and taut rhythmic profile will make a strong and lasting impression on audiences.

This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightful combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting, they are masterfully layered to reflect the composer's Scottish-American heritage. This presentation of a Scottish melody with Americana-inspired harmonies is a stunning example of compositional craft.Bravery and Grace is a setting of the unofficial Scottish national anthem, Scotland the Brave. While the melody is taken from Scotland the Brave, the accompaniment and harmony both have a “Western Americana†feel, reminiscent of composers like Roy Harris and Aaron Copland.  This combination of a Scottish melody with American harmony is a reflection of the composer’s Scottish-American Heritage. The piece begins with a fragment of Scotland the Brave presented in a lush and reflective context. The main theme is performed in full by the upper voices at m. 9. The middle voices perform the material at m. 17, and the lower voices perform it again at m. 33. This results in a loud passage representing pipers at m. 46. The traditional spiritual Amazing Grace appears suddenly at m. 51 in a somewhat polytonal setting. This is, once again, reminiscent of practices of the aforementioned American composers.  After this lyrical presentation, a fragment of the main theme returns at m. 66. This is followed by a broad restatement of the theme at m. 70 and a brisk conclusion with a final flair of polytonality.

Expressions is a heartfelt composition for beginning band that will inspire your young students’ sense of musicality. As the title implies, this work is a study in expression, which challenges the ensemble’s command of breath support, tone quality and intonation. Its chorale-like nature makes use of non-chord tones to project its emotion, asking each performer to play with maximum ensemble awareness and sensitivity. If you are looking for that special piece in the middle of your program, Expressions is sure to fulfill that purpose.

At funeral or memorial services and ceremonies, the traditional, slowly marching funeral music, the Tombeau, still plays an important musical role today. In most cases, such musics were created for a specific occasion, like the death of a prince or an artist. That was the case with this Tombeau for wind orchestra, too: Bertold Hummel wrote it after the death of a fellow composer and friend.Hummel was not afraid of expressing his feelings in a wistfully nostalgic funeral music full of tonal beauty which is close to the musical language of the 19th century with regard to form and harmony. In addition to the score and parts, our edition of this moving piece also contains the particell with which Hummel put down the Tombeau on paper in 1998.

Aeolus is the Greek mythological god of the winds. The title of this piece was chosen, in part, because of the Aeolian quality of the music. Although not strictly harmonized in the Aeolian mode, the themes themselves are purely Aeolian. The compositional form bookends a broad and dramatic middle section with two sections in regal march style. Aeolus is sure to be a great teaching tool for young bands!.Aeolus is the god of the winds in Greek mythology. The title was chosen to indicate the Aeolian quality of the music. Although not strictly harmonized in the Aeolian mode, the themes themselves a purely Aeolian. The opening section of the music should be performed in a march-like manner at a brisk tempo deemed appropriate by the director for the ensemble. The countermelody first heard at m. 31 should soar above the ensemble. The transition to the middle section at m. 49 should be played broadly and dramatically with careful attention to the ritardando dimuendo, both of which should be performed smoothly and gradually. Do not rush the fermata in m. 51. A sudden shift in tempo and dynamics in the transition will detract from the entrance of the contrasting theme played soli by the clarinet section at m. 52. The counter lines found in the contrasting middle section beginning at m. 53 will require careful attention to balance. The second transition section beginning at m. 79 requires a flexible tempo and a smooth blending of the horn line into the clarinet line. An effective,  unrushed rallentando at m. 81 will make the sudden forte entrance of the brass fanfare at m. 83 all the more dramatic. At m. 109, the tempo may begin to quicken at the discretion of the director.

Dämonen (Ein Kinderlied) – English: Demons (A Children's Song) – by Arnulf Herrmann is a 21-minute work for orchestra and a record with the children's song Die Blümelein, sie schlafen (The little flowers are sleeping). On it, white noise and historical fragments of this song, preserved in various versions, can be heard. The recording is interwoven with the orchestra, sets the tempo and, not least, provides the timeframe by limiting it to the duration of one record side. But the end is only technical: The needle lifts, but the song is not over.
The premiere took place on 16 October 2022 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, with the SWR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bas Wiegers.
The full score (EP 14634) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. The performance material can be hired.
