The magical world of King Arthur, Merlin and Mordred is the setting for Avalon. Unexpected opening figures portray the sudden entrance into another world. A choral-like melody represents the procession of ghosts headed by the mighty magician Merlin. Suddenly, ostinato figures and bi-tonal motifs indicate the attempt of Mordred and his horde to disturb the peace and quiet in the otherwise calm Avalon. Following a powerful statement of King Arthur, we hear a glissando referring back to the opening bars, and… we are back in the normal world. Breeze in the Forest was commissioned for the concert to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Haruyuki Nakatsukasa of Osaka Kyoiku University. “Kanreki†is a special term used to celebrate reaching the age of 60 in Japan. The composer was inspired by some of Professor Nakatsukasa’s admirable characteristics upon composing this work: he speaks softly and at the same level as his students; he is fashionable, stylish and refined. This work was commissioned by the Miyazaki Prefectural Police Band from Kyushu, Japan, and was premièred in 2017. Bandmaster Sano is an elder alumni of Musashino Academia Musicae, Toyko, where Satoshi Yagisawa also studied. He asked Yagisawa to write a brilliant one-minute fanfare that could be played as an opening piece for any concert. It will be perfect for yours! In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. Meinhard Drescher reçut ce concerto comme cadeau pour son seizième anniversaire. Il en assura la création le 18 octobre2009.Concertino Classico est structuré selon le schéma classique du concerto : vif - lent - vif. La partie solo peut également être confiée la Clarinette ou au Saxophone Alto.

Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line ‘An American Band with a British Accent’, as he wanted to combine the best of both countries’ band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band’s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs,which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the Clear Air and The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech. Songs from Across the Water werd geschreven in opdracht van de Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds, waarvan Phil Evans de oprichter en tevens de dirigent is. Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Palatine Concert Band uit Palatine in Illinois (VS), ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan in 2005. Zoals de titel al suggereert, is de muziek gebaseerd op een verborgen thema, datin veel subtiele verschijningen opduikt. Om de mijlpaal voor het orkest kracht bij te zetten creëerde de componist een vrolijke, feestelijke klank, ge nspireerd op een zeer bekende melodie. (De identiteit daarvan mag echter niet wordenprijsgegeven omdat zelfs de titel onder copyright valt. Laten we gewoon zeggen dat het een lied is dat vaak wordt gezongen bij de viering van een verjaardag.)Das ist wirklich einmal etwas ganz anderes! Wer außer William Himes käme schon auf die verrückte Idee, das bekannte Lied Happy Birthday to You vollkommen auseinander zu nehmen und dann zu einer erstaunlich kreativen Ouvertüre neu zusammenzusetzen? Und das hört sich dann sogar richtig toll an! Schon das Einstudieren dieser überraschenden Ouvertüre macht einen Riesenspaß, der sich dann mit Sicherheit auch aufs Publikum überträgt.
