Resignation was composed in memory of one of Ed Kiefer's best friends. Evoking the struggle of coming to grips with the loss of a dear friend, the piece is based on the hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. It is dramatic, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly beautiful. As Hans Christian Andersen once said, When words fail, music speaks..Dr. David S. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

Finally, a rap/rock piece with real educational value! Consistent with many established approaches, students will learn new sixteenth-note rhythms typically introduced in the first or second year of instruction through rap (speech rhythms), which will ensure accuracy when played on instruments later. There are also plenty of fun licks to play on instruments using easier rhythms (nothing harder than eighth notes). This one is such great fun that students will hardly know they're learning!

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title, Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.

This work is based on the story of the soldier and the princess from the film Cinema Paradiso. Long ago a poor soldier fell in love with a beautiful princess. He had nothing to offer her, but managed to meet her and declare his love. The princess was very taken by his emotional plea, and told him that if he were to wait under her balcony for one hundred days and nights, she would be his. Waiting patiently, the soldier endured all manner of torment from weather, wildlife and starvation. Finally on the next-to-last night, the soldier took up his chair and disappeared. The music evokes the atmosphere of the poignant story, and the work is divided into three different movements. Duration: 5:00.

Dedicated to, and premiered by, the Westchester Middle School Band of Westchester, Illinois, Mr. Jason Kluge, director, MONDO GLISSANDO targets that most critical of wind sections. When was the last time you featured your trombones? When was the last time they felt like STARS? Section feature pieces are one of the most important techniques available for keeping a section strong and well represented. MONDO GLISSANDO can even be used as a trombone SOLO piece, by having the non-solo trombones play from thetechnically simpler euphonium part.Either way, section or solo, there’s nothing like an exposed part on an upcoming performance to reinvigorate a musician’s interest and encourage that all-important PRACTICE!

Only in Sleep is a nostalgic vision of childhood re-experienced through dreams. Eriks Ešenvalds has created a work of subtlety, yet powerful and expressive. The music has an incandescent freshness and the Flugel Horn soloist heard at the opening returns at the close, lost in reverie, whilst florid arabesques float over one last pair of chordal oscillations, winding down to nothing. This brilliant arrangement for brass band has become every bit as popular as the original choral setting.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) originally wrote this work for solo piano and orchestra under the title Scherzo in D minor in 1886 for conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow, a large influence on Strauss' career. Von Bülow, however, consider the work a complicated piece of nonsense and wanted nothing to do it. Discouraged, Strauss set the work aside until 1889, when he met Scottish pianist Eugen d'Albert, who liked it while also suggesting some changes. With a new title, Burleske, and a dedication to d'Albert, the work was premiered on June 21st, 1890 in Eisenach at the Tonkünstlerfest with d'Albert at the piano and Strauss conducting. Despite this, Strauss remained convinced that the work lacked merit and refused to have the work published until 1894, although it eventually became one of his favorite works. Strauss never gave the work an opus number, but many consider it to be Op. 11, which is actually assigned to his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.
